Is there a particular reason for the Asterisk (*) in between the VIN. I haven't seen this in any of the VIN for Maruti Suzuki Swift. Thanks.

The Asterisk (*) is just a separator.
MA3KKD1S00631235 this 17 character is known as VIN
and this MA3KKD1S00631235*LA known as Chassis Number.

For maruti vehicles you need to get addition 2 charactors to know the month an year. its already explained several times. please refer the previous posts.
