Hi Wildon,
Form 22 showed the Truck as manufactured in Nov 2010 so my friend rejected it. Now he's got another Truck booked. Dealer has provided him following details and says it's Jan 2011 model. Could you please decipher this? Thanks in advance.

Re: Finding the VIN & manufacturing date/year on Indian cars

The above does seem to decode as Jan 2011.

10th Character is B - 2011
12th Character is A - January.

Only Wildon can get the exact dates.

By the serial number i would say first week of Jan(5th-7th). My wild guess based on other interpretations

For TATA its not possible for me to get the exact production date.

Seems like TATA is resetting the production serial number(Last 5 digits) every year. Below is a VIN which was submitted for decoding last year.

Makes sense. The difference is the year field and they are almost resetting the serial number for the next year.

Averaging out like 1000 cars a month, we can only guess the manufacturing date to a month. Great information Wildon.

Re: Finding the VIN & manufacturing date/year on Indian cars

MODEL NAME : i20 Magna (BB in 4th and 5th digit will give this information)
ENGINE TYPE : 1.2L KAPPA ( 8th Digit and the 4th and 5th digit combination will give this information)
FUEL TYPE : PETROL (Going by Engine Type, i just guessed)
TRANSMISSION : RHD & MT (2WD) (9th Digit that has L will give this information)
PRODUCTION DATE : Jan 2011 - (10th and Last digit as A is from where I am assuming the dates.)

This is what I could decode. The exact date could be decoded by Wildon.

I can confirm on this. Tata VIN serials are reset every year and the only way is to know probable month form the VIN.
