Car on Fire

Yesterday in the news I saw that an Opel Corsa caught fire on Western Express Highway - Near Santacruz in Mumbai. I have witnessed one such incident where M800 was on fire on Mumbai Nasik highway. Luckly all the passengers were out on the road.

Couple of years back, one of my friend's car caught fire at 5 Gardens. I think it was Palio.

What could be the reason for these cars catching fire all of a sudden? If it is short circuit, can we not have self extinguishing, jelly filled wiring for the car?

When we are dealing with more and more electical componens, like electric fuel pump, fuel injection, slightest of the short circuit can cause a spark and then BOOM.

What are the precautions one should take as a routine maintenance to avoide such a disaster.

I think the best thing to do is to get one of those small fire extinguishers and put it in the driver's side or passenger side cupholder. Another option is to mount it somewhere in the car. I see that in some Qualises.

Although there's only a small chance that the car will catch fire, it gives you peace of mind.

One of the precautions is to keep the electrical system intact. How? Get all your electrical/ICE done by professionals who use harness adapters etc rather than twisting and taping.
