thanks for the info, nicejets! the increasing fuel cost(premium unleaded petrol from Shell costs about Rs.53.50 here in b'lore) and the decreasing FE of my maruti (13.2kmpl, sometimes lower too), catapulted with the ever-increasing traffic jams, might eventually tempt me towards going in for this lpg kit, which i was once so repulsive about :)

If you have a hatchback please dont even consider going for LPG. As safety of life much more important that FE. No matter how safe it is, if(god forbid) some vehicle come smashes into the back of the car.
Hence big no-no to lpg.

Your doubts about LPG hatchback is unfounded. In fact, what can happen to an LPG hatchback under accident from rear can exactly happen to a sedan. You know what, in most sedans boot and cabin is seperated by foldable the rear seat and it's not air tight.

Go for LPG in hatchback if boot space and little loss of power seem trivial for the better economy it promises. In fact, if you select trapezoidal lpg tank which fits right into sparewheel cavity can help you save lot of space compared to cylinderical lpg tank.

What difference does it make if it is a hatch or a sedan when you have an explosion that you are imagining can happen ? A sedan/SUV will blow up as much as a hatch would.

Did you know that the LPG tank is a lot more safer in terms of build as well as it's place of existence than the regular fuel tank ? Please look around this forum for more info. :)
