A loud 'thud' sound whenever my Ford Ikon passes over potholes on the road.

I'd recently bought a used 2006 Ford Ikon 1.3 Flair with 30,000 KM covered.

There's a certain issue that I've found with the car, what's the possible reason for this issue:

I hear a loud 'thud' sound whenever the car passes over potholes or speed breakers on the road, while driving at anything higher than a 20 KMPH speed. This occurs with both sets of wheels--the front as well as the rear wheels. The only way to avoid this sound is to slow-down completely while driving over rough roads. My other car--a Maruti Esteem doesn't make any sort of sound while traveling over the same roads.

What can be the possible causes of this sound? Does this issue occur with any of the other cars of this model?

Thanks.

Get the suspension bush(rubber) checked or even replaced.

I'd agree.. But its strange that Ford's suspension bushes wear out at 30K kms..Maybe non genuine mileage..

What's so strange in that, headers? Its the same in my Ford Ikon 1.6 2005 model and not even 30k km on the odo!

I'd just say the suspension is a real noisy one.

Yeah...even mine too. I have 2004 Ikon Flair. Done around 15K kms. It also gives a loud thud sound when even you gove over a hump >25kmph. But it is okay and managable.

That is quite normal for an ikon. It actually thumps over the pot holes. Very noisy suspension it has. But for your peace of mind , get the bushings checked and replaced if necessary.

everybody has said it,... so do i. just check and / or replace the suspension bushes. it comes as a complete replacement kit.i did this for my OHC sometime back and did not go further to change the suspensions as was thought / adviced before i did this.the difference was quite obvious.

I dont think that is a cause for concern. Its a feature/trait of the ikon.
My Ikon Flair which is now at about 12K+ kms on the odo also exclaims the same way when its pushed over speedbreakers. I guess its got to do with the stiff suspension it is endowed with.

its the suspension rebound damper thats making the thud sound. you can just do a routine check of the suspension and if everything is aok, leave it there.

it is surprising to me a bit that quite a lot of ford owners agreeing to this sound to be common!!!
am just adding in a quick way to check your suspension...

- park your car on a solid and even surface with no tilt
- apply pressure using yourself at a point right over each wheel (of course one at a time) and try to depress the suspension setup by pushing it downwards.
- the car body must bound back with a firm, non-lethargic single bounce
- no creaking sound must be heard

- now,...drive onto an empty and straight road and while the car is going steadily and straight folloing an imaginary or the painted line, leave your hands off the steering wheel (do this preferably below 35 kmph)
- the car must traverse a straight line and not pull towards one side.

then, if you hear the thud sound and if you have a ford, live with the sound.
else change your suspension bushes.

this is more than enough for the daily drivers.

Try crossing the same bump at the same speed with a loaded car, and it might scrape the bump, but you will not hear any 'thud' sound from the suspension.

I prefer to hear the thud than to hear my car scrape through every pothole. But it is disappointing that the ikon suspension has to give up so early. Just see if you can deaden that thud sound.

John i dont think thats because the suspension has given up. I was saying its actually how the suspension is. I got the same feedback from other sources as well whom i got in touch with.
