Trying to understand K & N filters

Guys, excuse me if this tpic has been discussed earlier, I couldn't find it.

I have been reading about modifications in the car and often I read about using K & N filter. I am curious to know what difference this filter makes? Does it improve FE or performance in general? Is it available for bikes as well?

Any pointers, inputs would be highly appreciated!
