Chevy Turbo

Hi, my family owns a Chevy Tavera since the past 3 years. The car has been running exceptionally well & has clocked close to 200,000 Kms in these 2 years.
However to our utter dismay, I have discovered that the Turbo has gone Kaput... The problem is there is seepage of oil in the turbo. Every few days we have to get the damn thing cleaned & things get fine till it starts smoking again...
I inquired with Chevy & they told me some funny reasons like fuel quality being the main cause of the failure of the turbo.
Has any 1 of you faced a similar problem on their Tavera or any other car for that matter? What is the remedy besides replacing the whole thing?

Still under warranty?

you will need to rebuild you turbo. yours might be the chevy thts run this much hence you turbo will need a rebuild. Turbos are required to have a rebuild after xx kms...depending on turbo design

So rebuild is the way to go i guess.

well a tata exec told me once that for any turbo you need to let the car idle for a few mins at the end of the day to let the oil drain out otherwise the next day it will clog the turbo.

The turbo seals are blown and you need a rebuild. At 2 lakh kms, you should not be complaining.

On an average 8333 kms a month and 275 kms a day. Quite possible with a commercial vehicle.

Absolutely. Forget turbo, our Indigo started cribbing about smallest of things at 50k.

Error - My earlier post should have read 3 years instead of 2 .
How does one go about re-building a Turbo? The guys at Chevy told us that the Turbo has very delicate parts (read fans) and cannot be repaired in any way. The cost for a new one was 1.25 Lacs since this was an older model. The new car comes with a Turbo which cost a mere 40,000 compared to the older one.
Warrant has expired... so no chance of free replacement.
Lastly... I am not complaining... In fact we are very happy with the kind of reliability provided by the Tavera.

Can't the new turbo be fitted with some "Jugaad". You will save 80K

Do some quick-fix cover up job on the turbo and sell the car!! That's the best way out! Spending 1.25lac on a 3yr old Tavera is not worth it at all!!!

And off-load the problem onto an unsuspecting owner? Thats not necessarily in the best of spirits, is it?

As far as I know the Tavera runs a Isuzu Panther engine (JA-1L) would reccomend that you try and source the turbo from Indonesia or if you could give me the turbo's model number could help in finding a replacement turbo specification for it.

Damn, I am surprised to see that nobody sells a turbo rebuild kit in India. Might want to try contacting the manufacturer. Its just a bunch of seals and bearings.
