This post is about my 2006 Ford Ikon 1.3 Flair that has done about 30,000 KM till date.

There weren't any sort of unusual sounds on my drive to the office this morning. However, when I drove back home this afternoon--there was a new sound from the steering wheel. It's not a loud sound, however it's audible inside. This occurs whenever I turn the steering wheel, it sounds as if it's touching some plastic part. The sound doesn't seem to be coming from the steering wheel itself, but it sounds as if it's in contact with some plastic part around the wheel. I visually inspected the area but didn't notice anything that probably could be causing the sound.

I checked the level of the Power Steering Fluid today, but there's sufficient quantity. Is there any other likely reasons for such a sound?

what kind of sound is this, is it like fluid flowing inside a pressure valve, ill try to be more creative here... is it "pchsssssssk" sound? :D

If so its normal dont bother. Also is the sound coming even while turning the wheel when vehicle is not in motion, or only when the car is rolling?

Hey I noticed the similar sound in my ikon after I traveled on rough roads. In my case the guys at ford told me that due to some minor impact the steering wheel was pushed inside as a result it was scraping against the streeing coloum whenever the wheel was turned. They told me it was a minor problem & I got it fixed.

I took apart the plastic parts covering the steering column yesterday night. I tried to find the probable cause for the sound.

I found that when the plastic base at the bottom of the turn signal indicator stalk is pushed forward--the steering doesn't make a sound. There were also some visible scratch marks on this plastic part--probably caused by contact with something. There wasn't any sound on the drive to the office today.

I hope that this solved the issue!

Drive the car for a while & try turning the wheel as often as possible. If the problem arises again take it to the service centre.

It seems to have worked! The steering hasn't made any noises since then.

I still don't know what caused the plastic part to move in the first place.

Can happen if legs gave the plastic part a bump while ingress or exit.

I had a funny incident with ol OMNI when the cleaner guy with all enthu managed to shove the cleaning cloth and dislodge the horn contacts which used to scrape and make an irritating sound.

I too face this problem with my ikon now. Last time i reported it at the service center, they said i was due to suspension problem+ worn out tyres. They rectified the suspension issue and swaped tyres and the problem got resolved.

Hi joshdrive

I know it's is long time .But I have recently serviced my Ford Ikon TDCi for 60000 Kms service and the SA has advised to replace the steering column and Front Shocks.

Can I know the cost of this parts including labor.I am feeling the steering has lot of play and feel lot of "tak tak" on rough roads.

Anyways they have replaced the ball joint and tie road ends during service.

Any ideas will greatly appreciated.
