When Tata Nano was launched, it was claimed that the car had more volume than the Maruti 800.

I am just curious to know, how does one calculate the volume of a car?

The car is closed completely and then they fill it with water.
Once it can take no more, the water is drained and the quantity measured.

I guess its the same with boot also. thats why its mentioned in ltrs.

is the volume calculated without the seats and the dash or with them?

On CAD tools where the entire car with full details is modeled, you can easily calculate the volume.

cars are designed Mechanically and geometry is used ...

But volume can be measured in any direction. So a narrow tall car may have the same volume as a low wide one. So a bigger volume doesn't always relate to a more comfortable seating arrangement.

The best way is as Bull frog told.But CAD drawings may not be reachable.Water in car lol.Not practical.But you can roughly calculate it by dividing the car into small geo shapes.

This can be got from autocad when we put the full details of the car into it.

@govigov: Yes, the seats and other things will be removed while calculating the capacity in ltrs.
