Hi All,

I recently bought the Optra Magnum Diesel LT. Its done 1200 kms already on the ODO and Im keeping speeds strictly under 60km/h and rpms in the sub 2k range. My qn is that Im gng to Pune and would like to take the car but on the expressway where i would travel 100 km/h plus, would it be ok to speed up the car upto 100Km/H or should I wait until the car does 5000Kms and then increase my driving speed. Please help!!

it should be about run in by now. i suggest stick below 3k rpm and dont go above 120kmph. also dont keep a steady speed for long i.e. if your crusing at 100 then slow down to 80 for a while then you can go back to 100 or 120 for a while.

As long as you dont cross 3K RPM, you should be just fine. Below 3K RPM's it is possible to do 100kmph or over.

Its not the speed (100 kph) but the rpm that you must keep an eye on. For a brand new diesel, I would restrict to 2000 - 2400 rpm over the running in period. In 5th gear, that should give you over a 100 kph in the Optra.

The expressway would not be the ideal place to take a brand new car, as a new engine should have "varying" rpm levels. Chances are that you will spend most of your expressway time at one cruising speed and hence, at a steady RPM level.

I want to thank you for all these valuable inputs. I referred to the manual and it says to take care for the first 1000 kms. Should I go by this?

Thats what the manual means, taking care means running in your engine properly. So just keep the rev limits below 3k rpm and u are good to roll

its better you wait until at least 2k kms before you floor it fully. though if your manual says you can do what you want after 1000kms then floor it man.lol:

Since you have already done more than the recommended 1000kms keeping it under 2k, your run- is pretty much complete.

However, before going pedal to the metal, I suggest you take things up a notch at a time, that is, add 500-750 rpm for every 500km done on your way to the redline.

A car's dynamics are very different at high speed. I mean the way a car will corner and take on a rough patch of road at high speed. So increasing the speed gradually helps you learn about the cars behaviour.
