Want to spruce up an older car

Hi,

I am new to this forum. I own a 2001 Old Honda City 1.5 Exi. I bought it in 2006 from a friend at 61000 KM and have now driven it till 98990 KM.

My suspensions have started making sounds and at low speeds, the car seems to vibrate from below. There are small, niggling issues like central lock not working, head lights dimming from time to time.

I love this car and would like to overhaul it to make it last me at least a couple of years more.

I am absolutely new to this and this is my first car. I would appreciate it if you could advise me on what and how I should be overhauling my car.

If you are ok with slightly higher bill, i would any day recommend a good Honda dealer to get the job done. Mumbai guys can recommend a good dealer.

If i were you i would:

1) Do a complete service and repair through the dealer. Use the nearest major service routine that corresponds to your odo reading for the reference for work to be done.
2) Suspension overhaul, maybe change the rubber parts completely that suspension has.
3) Attend to other complaints.
4) Change all fluids (if not covered under service).
5) Do a complete tune up of engine.
6) Do car detailing for interiors and exterior / touch up and polish if scars are there.

Thanks for the prompt response. I have a friend who owns a garage in Mumbai. I have gone to him for 2 years and he seems OK. I service the car every 5000 KM. The roads here are really taking a toll on the car though.

I had some more queries:

1. What suspensions do I put now? Stock/Something fancier?
2. My windshield needs replacement. Any suggestions for this?
3. When I drive in second gear, the car seems to rumble from below.
4. Any other suggestions!

Overhauling the Honda engine at 1Lakh kms is not necessary as they last for a good 3L kms if maintained properly. So don't touch the engine parts as of now
Just get all you belts(timing, power steering, ac belts etc) replaced., throttle body cleaning etc..
Get you suspension overhauled/replaced - atleast 17K INR for replacing.
Just get all your rattles get fixed
For windshield go with the ASAI (original Honda)glass -4K ???

I have a budget of about 25K. Is there anyway to tell whether I really need to replace my suspension? Also, is there a way to fix the existing suspension?

Check if your friend had ever overhauled the suspension. If not, best to get a complete job done. I remember Viper posting that he once got his OHC suspension reworked from an authorised center for under 15K.

Change all fluids as well as filters (if not done recently). If your car hasn't used synthetic before, best to stick to regular Honda oil itself. Also, get a complete tuneup (throttle body adjustment etc.) and change all sparks (if not replaced in the last 30K).

For the windscreen, claim insurance and get it replaced for a marginal cost from Windshield experts. Of course, this is considering that you don't have a high NCB to lose.

You can choose your friends garage, or try Linkway Honda. I have had a decent experience with them so far.

With all of the above, your car will return totally refreshed.

I dont know if you have done any work on the suspensions before? OHC suspensions need work once you do about 70-80k kms. if you want to change to new once it would cost you easily about 20+k but if you want to get the existing once redone mignt be about 5-6k but ensure you get it done froma reputed mech.

Very few after market options are available & all of them are very expensive, expect to pay around 50-60k minimum.

New windshield costs around 4.5k, get it replaced under insurance.

Check the exhaust mountings checked & the exhaust itself also checked.

Check Lower Arms, Axles, Steering rack for leakage, A/C Compressor, Tie-Rod ends (Major problem, would almost certainly be gone unless replaced before) and Shock Absorbers.

I went to the garage. The suspensions need replacement. I was told only the front 2 need replacement. Is this OK?

The timing belt is being replaced. The engine mounting is also under the lens. I am getting the windshield changed at Windshield Experts. The exhaust mountings will also be corrected.

I am hoping this will correct most issues!! Man, there is so much I need to learn about cars!!!

Is it absolutely necessary to change these belts? I have never got the belts changed on my 10 year old. Will changing them make any driving difference or is it a preventive measure?

If the previous owner had not changed the timing belt, that is priority no.1. A snapped timing belt = farewell to the engine.

Rightly said GTO. Please replace your Timing belt if your car has run 1L Kms.

Correct timing for a car is very very important , It's more of a preventive measure. Inproper timing can ruin the engine on a long term

OT-Timing chain doesn't need a replacement

OHC has a timing belt & she should be replaced once your car does 80k-1L kms.

There is no previous owner so I know the belt has not been changed.

Mine is way over the 1L mark.
