power or torque, which one matters more ?

when looking for a new vehicle, which figure should be of more importance ? I have seen ads like power of xxx ps@yyy rpm
and torque of xx nm@yy rpm
My doubt is should we pay attention for a high torque engine or one with good power rating ?
if going for a trade off, which is better ? power or torque ?
