Doubt: what does this cap do?

was taking a peek under the hood of my indica and saw this cap lying open. This is on the passengers side of the firewall. My first response was to close it.
Doubt: what does this cap do?-picture.jpg
Now I'm wondering whether I should have left it as it is. Pardon my ignorance

It is used to fill a/c refrigerant. Keep the cap closed so that no dust or dirt goes inside it.
