My point is that if you really want to extend the life of the stock filter, then add a pre-filter. Here are some ideas:

Add a K&N universal, conical type filter before the stock filter.

Cut a piece of foam to the exact size of your regular filter, place on top of the filter and install. This way you can pull the piece of foam out and clean to your heart's content while not damaging the regular filter.

Tie a piece of dhoti on the cold air intake for a pre-filter.:D But make sure it is tight to avoid being sucked in.

These are all better solutions than beating the snot out of your air filter when is supposed to be replaced.

Do these air filter last life long?
If not then, How long would a stock Air Filter last on a petrol engine small car like WagonR nd sorts?

k&n and green filters also have their cleaning kits. keep cleaning them regularly and use can use them for a long time.
stock filters should be changed at every service and at max for 10000kms.

K & N Recharger Kit is available in Ozz One near BDA Complex indiranagar, was even offered 10% discount in Vaahan Yaatra..

Is it recommeded to clean the OEM air filters with water, detergent or with a tooth brush to remove the foriegn partciles.

I'm Curious to know that !! appreciate your suggestions

If its paper filter (which is mostly the case with OE filters), you certainly will distroy it! :eek:

Frankly! i have'nt obsereved the type of filter (Paper or cotton based)in my OHC 1.5 exi, as i bought it recently (a week back)

My questions OHC owners are

1. I'm planning to change the filters and looking for a good option. My
options are2. If i decide to buy a K&N filters, what are the benefits? any OHC owners
please substantiate with your experiences
I did see some threads which said no changes, unless you have issues
with lower gears (1 & 2) which i dont think is an issue in an OHC 1.5
exi, but still want to hear it from horses mouth.

3. Does K&N manufacture stock replacement filter for OHC 1.5 exi, as i
could not see any part number on K&N High Performance Air Filters, Oil Filters, & Air Intakes - Official K&N Engineering Site or may be

As far as i remember OHC has paper element filter in it. Regarding changing filters, if the car is stock best is to go for replacement filters from K&N, Greens etc. Most of the reputed accessory shops will have them.

Advantage is longer life since they can be cleaned and reused and slightly better performance due to additional air flow.

Hey Jaggu, can you refer any reliable shop in Bangalore where i can purchase the K&N or Green stock replacement filter

Do a search and you should find dealer details in BLR, Methods are the distributors IIRC. I dont have any direct contacts.

Today i was cleaning my car interiors and then opened bonnet for some cleaning.
I Also wanted to check if I can clean the Air-filter myself, as the vacuum cleaner was with me, I instantly opened the Filter housing, and blew the air using blower first, then switch to suction mode and did cleaned it.

although the filter was just 2 months old, it did had lot of dust.

cleaned the rest of the car and after a few hours went out for some work.
vroooom, the car was showing a very visible difference in pick up and drive.

apart from this cleaning i did cleaned Radiator and AC Coil with water which had lots of dust too.

So is it normal to car behave like a darling after this much cleaning ?

Edit: sorry i was too dirty while the cleaning was done, so didn't took pictures, next time I'll take the snaps and post.

i knew that i had delayed the air filter change - i don't take my car to FASS / Tata-Fiat service centers. My car taken care by a Hyundai Authorized SC. The mechanic said the filter was OK and blew compressed air to clean it a bit. But i was not satisfied and finally thought of changing the air filter by myself 8 months later (roughly 2000kms).

Took some advice from an Ex-DBHPian on the ease of changing the air filter DIY. here it goes:

Step 1
"Pop the hood" and find the Air Filter box behind the RHS head lamp cluster.

Step 2
open the locks that holds the box cover / intake pipe

Step 3
See the difference by yourself (Old and New) and carefully replace the old one with the new filter. both filters are of the same size - though, in the pic they look different.

Step 4
lock the air filter box carefully.

I thought that i need to reset the ECU - but the Ex-DBhpian told me that ECU should learn the change in airflow (better airflow) by itself and make changes in the values. Resetting the ECU will result in ECU re-learning everything afresh and hence will also know the new airflow rate.

PS: Air Filter change for the 1.2 / 1.1 Stile` should be similar.

My Swift Petrol has done 45000 kms. I think it's still running with the same airfilter it came with.
The Swift handbook recomends changing it at 40000 kms. The maruti website says it should be replaced at 80000 kms - this is general, not specific to Swift

Carboy, you should DEFINITELY replace the air-filter at 40,000 kms tops! Our conditions are way too dusty for any longer than that. Personally, I'd replace the stock air-filter anywhere between 20,000 - 30,000 kms. Note that the air-filter's effectiveness directly affects your car's performance & fuel efficiency.
