http://www.howstuffworks.com/gears.htm

the link above should tell u everything about gear ratios .

shifitng point is different for each engine .. redlining the car each time does not give you a good run ... engine power curves down after a certain engine speed ...so look to shift by 85 - 90% of the tacho..
but it all depends run your car a few times .. too see what is the ideal shifting point ..

cheers

you just want to know more about gear ratios?
well basically they are worked on in tandem with the engine thereby giving you faster initial and maintain the power throughout the revs at maximum.

well by what i know, it is not necessary to develop gear ratios for a better initial speed ... we can have ratios to give just top end speed also!! .... By the way does any Bhpian have a closed ratio gear box or a Sequential Box on their cars????

as the name "close-ratio"suggests,the gearing will be short ,such that the revvs stay in the power band range throughout in all gears.
but i think the top speed will be reduced.

so is it like if you have close ratios the top speed goes down and the accelration is better.how much does the entire setup cost's.i dont think it would be suitable for a car which is used regularly...is it only meant for racing purpose ?

yeah ..close ratio is a performance setup .. the car is constantly in its powerband ...its a headache driving in city conditions ,mileage suffers aswell ..
but the fact that ur feeling that pull each time shift up is thrilling enough..my friend has a mazda MX6 .. came stock with a close ratio ... and a performance muffler .. feels great .. but sometimes it does get tiring the shift interval are short in the city you'll end up driving with one hand on the shifter all the time ..

yeah the top end will drop a little bit..... but then the acceleration is just too fabulous...! Infact ideally i would love to fit in a sequential box, but it will proabably cost me about 5-6 lacs! Will team-Bhp be interested in sponsering me???

Infact one of the JKtyres Rally car (Group A) had a sequential box i was told...! hehehhe and guess what???? Mr. Anmol breaks the Box....when he was driving on the streets of delhi!! hehehe
