i use mobil1 super syn 0w40 in my car.its costs about 1800rs for a can of 4 liters in mumbai.

Quote:

dude, 1000rs for 500ml is CRAZY EXPENSIVE...!!! I got 4 litres of fully synthetic mobile 1 for 2200rs...!!
even 2200rs is expensive.!!!!!!!!!
its available in 0w40 and 5w30in the super syn range.
not sure if the 15w40 u r talking about is a fully synthetic oil.

hey guys..whats the difference btw synthetic oil and the normal engine oil
the normal engine oil that you use is mineral oil.
fully synthetic oil is a man made oil in which additives are added to suit our requirements.they have greater drain intervals and have superb lubricating properties.hence its not recommnded in brand new engines which have not been run in.so its safe to use after maybe 10k kms.

What would be the changing interval in case of Mobil 1 synthetic oils? I am sure you wont change them often if they cost 2200 for 4 liters. Would you recommend that in car with over 100,000 kms?
One of the oil suppliers here has advised me the Esso mineral oil, which is also under Mobil oils and reasonably priced. Any experiences?

I too was surprised when I took my RS for it's 1st Service. They 'strongly' advise the use of synthetic oil - 15W50. The 5 ltr oill change costs Rs. 3,175.

I would go against that advice....synthetic oil can hamper the engine surfaces to bed in properly (because its too good). Some amount wearing down is necessary for the parts to bed in. Running in period is the most important time for your engine...and since your car is new ... i'd suggest you stick to the mineral oils...and look for synthetic oils after 10000kms.

Driter - Thanks for the input. Unfortunately I posted this message after my first service at 5,400 km - at which time the oil change had already happened. My only consolation is that the dealer claims that this oil is as per Skoda specs.

Drifter - I checked with the dealer and it seems that Skoda uses synthetic oil for new cars. I guess - then it would be ok to 'continue' with it 1st service onwards. Right ?

While on the topic, I came across this faq on the shell site :http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?...l/faq_bsl.html

What is interesting is how they define "severe driving conditions" !

yeah it shouldnt hurt to continue with the synthetic oil. but personally...i'd take up synthetic oils after the engine has been run in properly.

and yeah ... driving in mumbai comes under severe driving conditions.

this is wrong..! 5W50 has a higher viscosity....then the specs specified by the indian car manufactures..! Ask ur car manufactures as to which is the optimum oil viscosity....for the engine and then u decided whether to go for a 5W40 or a 5W50..!! if ur engine is specified to run with a viscosity of 40 and u put 5W50, it can harm ur engine.!!
