dude 5w50 is a better grade than 15w40. so it will not do any harm to your engine. when you are getting something better you can say no to something worse. by the way you can also try shell helix synthetic which is 15w50 and is better than 15w40. but not better than 5w50.
btw dude i hope you know what 5, 40 and 50 stand for. they are the ambient temperatures of the atmosphere. since it doenst get as cold as 5 degree celcius in bombay you can go for an initial 15 grade and use 50 instead of the 40 since the temperature in summer in some years may rise above that in bombay and surrounding areas. btw you dont get 15w40 grade in synthetic oil. you will get them in semi-synthetic.

adil 40 & 50 are the viscosities of the oil and not ambient temperatures. Honda recommends an oil of 40 Viscosity & they say that a viscosity of 50 is very high of the engine. It may lead to some other problems. I also confirmed with the dealers. The ideal oil is with a viscosity of 40 for our engines. When we say 15W40 it means that the temp. is 15 degrees and viscosity is 40.

It's better you stick to what the company says. According to the chart in the car manual you can use 15W-40 or 15W-50 grade oil.

The Ikon i think uses 10W-40, that might work on the Vtec but 5W-50 seems a bit over-board.

I've been using the Honda oil from the very first day and never felt the need to use anything else. Even after 49K kms, the engine is as good as new.

Jaggu, I've been hearing this for sometime but don't know where can I find this in Bangalore?
Anybody knows where can I get MOBIL 1 in Bangalore?
My handbook says API SJ grade SAE15W-40. Do I get this (if ever I get it in Bangalore) from MOBIL1? Or they have some different classification?

Its not too difficult to get Mobile 1, its quite readily available, just ask any engine oil supplier for help. U can use a oil of grading 15W40 or 0W40. Just make sure that the Viscosity of the Oil is '40'. Coz lot of people can suggest you to go for 15W50....saying that a viscosity of '50' will also work for your car. Strictly insist with only a viscosity '40'
