Mine is a 2005 (March) Getz GLS, which ran only 17,000 KMs in six years. It did not run much, and I guess that's why the problem did not surface soon enough to be covered under warranty / extended warranty.

I have been experiencing the same problem in my i10 1.1 2008.
The smell comes from the rear of the vehicle while starting.
I opened and checked the fuel pump cover underneath the seat and it is completely dry, no smell, in fact had dry dust accumulated.
No smell from engine bay too.
Mechanic had earlier suggested it might be a bad fuel filling cap but that too is perfectly dry n smell free.

Car is sparingly used (once a week) and is kept in closed parking.
Had exhaust welded some time back- can it be related?

Have run out of ideas, please suggest what to do now

Since you checked the tank. Here's what I'd check:

a) Does your car have starting problems? Smelling fuel at the back of the car whilst starting generally points to unburnt fuel expelled via the exhaust. Check the ignition system including spark plugs and timing.

b) Any leakage from the fuel pipes running from the tank to the engine?
