Also can you tell if there are vibrations (like repeated vibration in forward and backward direction at the point where the clutch engages which seems to smooth out but can be felt nonetheless if the revs are high also)when the clutch is engaged in first gear.
I had taken the car last week to Srinivasa Auto, Hadapsar authorized TATA ASS. The garage owner recognized me and offered to do a test drive. He tried to engage the first gear and it was hard but he said its ok.
We took the car on a Hill where it could be driven only on 1st gear and we did shifting from 2nd to 1st and again 2nd and I was able to re create the synchro clashing noise.
The mechanic put his hand behind the left front wheel of the car and adjusted the clutch pedal free play.

Effect: Clashing has stopped, 1st gear can be shifted even at 30 kmph although it takes its own time to synchronize.

Fault: Excessive clutch pedal free play. But this setting came from company! and I am sure this excessive clutch pedal free play has already taken its toll on the synchronizer to some extent. As of now the 1st gear has no problem and also 2nd gear has become smooth.

Due to the excessive clutch pedal free play the clutch was not disengaging properly causing the synchronizer rings to clash and not shift while in motion.

I was charged zero rupees for setting the clutch pedal free play and was saved off a costly Gearbox Overhaul affair.

Well just for records, it costs 5k to replace a single double cone synchronizer in TATA ASS. Also from the old Indica spare parts list available on team-bhp, I could make out that the double cone synchro should cost somehwere about 2-3k INR. The excel is an old one and it shows the cost of "Assembly double cone synchro" as 1600 Rs.

Thanks again. Rightly said, I talked to TATA gearbox designer also and he said the effects of a dragging clutch are first felt in 1st and Reverse gear. How true he was! Although I had no problems with reverse but 1st gear shifting suffered.

Few days back, just before the AC problem started, a small quantity of mild greasy kind of watery liquid ran out from the AC outlet.
The problem started again. Greasy kind of liquid dripped from the outlet, AC started emitting odour and cooling started to drop. Took my Vista directly to Behr dealer, Sri Balaji Associates, Coimbatore.

When I explained about the odour and greasy liquid, straight away they said it is because of evaporator/cooling coil leakage. So dashboard removed and found a leak in cooling coil.

Indica Vista - list of Known problems-coil1.jpg

Indica Vista - list of Known problems-coil2.jpg

The jobs done are
a) Dashboard removed and fitted
b) OE evaporator + expansion valve replaced
c) Nitrogen pressure testing of whole system
d) AC gas charging
e) Compressor oil changed
f) Blower cleaned.

They took two days to complete the work and the final bill amount was Rs. 8250/- .

Dashboard fitting was perfect, no rattles, no mess up of electricals. AC cooling is back to normal at present (temperature of 9 at the vent). Parts carry only 3 months warranty against 1 year at TATA ASC.

TASC guys gave an estimate of Rs. 15000/- upwards (Rs. 8000 for cooling coil & expansion valve + Rs. 7000/- for labour + gas + oil) for the same work.

Arun - something is wrong with the prices quoted by TASS or even charged by Behr SC. I got my Manza's AC overhauled in Apr this year and manza has exactly same HVAC as Vista. Total cost for behr cooling coil was 3k, labor 2k and another 1k for gas, compressor oil etc. Though in my case part + labor was covered under EW and I had to pay only for gas+oil+few bucks for misc clips etc.

Did they by any chance confuse between behr and subros systems. Later on Vistas and Manzas came with Subros system and Subros cooling oil is pretty expensive (as I was told), but I can see from pics, yours is definitely Behr.

Amit, Yes its Behr only. I even checked with a local AC mechanic before. He quoted around Rs. 7000/- for evaporator replacement. Though he was working with lot of cars, somehow I was not convinced, parts strewn all around and bit skeptical on the quality of parts and dashboard fitting. So I thought Rs. 8250/- was reasonable from an authorised service, as it was an organised one. I guess your Manza's cooling coil was replaced with expansion valve. Can they be replaced separately?

On the TASC's estimate, I re-confirmed with them even after completing the work, as there was a huge difference. They quoted the same. So something had gone wrong with the prices.

Arun - I am not sure if coil and expension valve can be replaced seperately. In my case I was billed for coil only, so may be valve was found okay (or was part of price of cooling coil). Since mine was covered in EW, they did not give removed parts to me.

Re: Indica Vista - list of Known problems

Dear friends,

My Tata India Vista TDI which has run around 69K Km has the "Check engine signal on" However whenever i touch speeds around 50+ the signal goes off. I took it to TASC, they were not able to solve it. I am now planning to go to the Concorde TASC.

What do you think is the problem? The engine is running smooth, no missing, no drop in mileage etc?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Re: Indica Vista - list of Known problems

Has anyone from this forum upgraded tyres of their vista? I am interested in migrating to higher profile tyres (70 or higher!), but the dealers says that if I migrate to a 70 profile, then they will not fit. As of now i am on 175/65/14

Just heard from a friend that there might be a problem with the nozzle? Could someone share some light on this.

Re: Indica Vista - list of Known problems

After 4 years & covering 41K+ kms, recently observed that the tailgate of my car does not hold up when opened. The gas springs/ gas balancers have lost their strenght and the tailgate just falls down.

Showed to TASC, since out of extended warranty too, they say its common and i need to replace it. Costs approx 1100 for a set.

Anyone else facing this ?

Was the problem solved. I faced the same problem sometimes back; it turned out that one of the glow plugs had gone bad. Usually it is the first thing to check. Or sometimes the fuel rail pressure drop also causes this.

Hello,

In my diesel Vista, the 'water in fuel' lamp has started glowing. This happened yesterday evening as soon as I had refuelled from my usual gas station. After this i drove for around 7 km.*What can be done in this situation. How urgent is the issue at hand and how long can I keep using the car as I am not in a position to take the car to the service station for the next few days.*
