Re: All about diesel engine oils

A quick question, nowadays we see lot engine oils that can be used in both Petrol and Diesel engines. For a Diesel engine is is safe to go with such oils or to hunt for one that is specific to only Diesel engines. Question is for my SCross 1.6.

That's the D16AA engine so you need a ACEA C2 5w30 or 0w30. Take your pick of these - 5w30 is fine for hotter climates like India as long as it has ACEA C2 rating.

Many thanks for the recommendations. I also found one from Amsoil-
https://www.amazon.in/Signature-Synt...s=amsoil+5w-30

But it is ACEA E9, E7, ACEA E6, will this be suitable considering the recommended is ACEA C2?
Also found one more from Liqui Moly-

Re: All about diesel engine oils

The amsoil is fine but your fuel economy will go for a toss. A bit overkill for smaller diesel engines. You want amsoil check their 5w30 European Car Formula.

ACEA C3 should also be reasonable but on the safer side go for C2 oils.

ACEA C2 Stable, stay-in-grade Engine Oil with Mid SAPS-Level, intended for use as catalyst compatible Oil at extended Drain Intervals in Vehicles with all Types of modern Aftertreatment Systems and High Performance Passenger Car & Light Duty Van Gasoline & DI Diesel Engines that are designed to be capable of using Low Viscosity Oils with a minimum HTHS Viscosity of 2.9 mPa*s.

ACEA C3 Stable, stay-in-grade Engine Oil with Mid SAPS-Level, intended for use as catalyst compatible Oil at extended Drain Intervals in Vehicles with all Types of modern Aftertreatment Systems and High Performance Passenger Car & Light Duty Van Gasoline & DI Diesel Engines that are designed to be capable of using Oils with a minimum HTHS Viscosity of 3.5 mPa*s.

Re: All about diesel engine oils

Hey.

Looking for an engine oil for my dad's 2014 Tata Aria 2.2L Varicor engine.

I was initially looking at the Shell Helix Ultra 5w40 that I use on my Linea 1.4L Fire. But, given that the manual states a API-CH4+MB228.3 I was wondering which engine oil would be best suited for my dad's car.

It's been about 9-10 months since the last oil change from the ASC. I also noticed some black soot on the exhaust tips. What could be the cause of that?

Thanks
Nikhil

Re: All about diesel engine oils

CH4+above is -

Mineral - Shell Rimula, Caltex Kixx etc the sort of mineral oils that come in a 7.5 liter bucket

Synthetic - Mobil Delvac 1, Amsoil 5w40 CK4

Don't use SHU 5w40 that's API SN/CF and ACEA A3/B4, great for petrol cars and light duty diesels, maybe not so much for a 2.2 varicor.

Soot on the exhaust tips = too rich fuel / injector clogging etc.

You could also try the Castrol Edge titanium range which works good to. It is fully synthetic too and I've been using this personally over the past 7 years so can vouch for it. Cheers

That is not an api ch4 or higher oil so while it is a good oil it is not fit for his purpose.

I had Tata Aria and always used Castrol GTX Diesel API CH4 as recommended by Tata and had no problems costed around 310 per liter.

Hey Hserus, not to question your knowledge, but AFAIK with my limited understanding Castrol Edge pro is an SN range engine oil and has been recommended for vehicles made after 2010 and CH4 is for those between 1998-2002 to meet those emission standards.

Also, what I remember reading is that SN is a grade that provides benefits as: High temperature deposit protection for pistons; better sludge control; better seal compatibility and after-treatment compatibility and hence IMHO can be supplemented in those cars that require CH4 compliant oils.

Re: All about diesel engine oils

I was rummaging through reviews between Shell vs Mobil 1 and found something interesting. Thought this might contribute to collective knowledge of this thread.

Re: All about diesel engine oils

It is sn/cf right?

SN is the latest in a series of API standards for petrol engines. S for spark.

CK4 is the latest in the API standards for Diesel engines, C for compression.

So the fact that you are using a SN rated article matters very little. To complicate things most such oils also comply with ACEA standards for dual use petrol / diesel oils which some car manufacturers (Toyota, most Europeans, Ford diesels etc) expect rather than the API ones.

But if a car says it needs CH4 or higher you need a full fledged diesel oil not one of the petrol / diesel ones.

Mobil Delvac 1 for synthetic CI4+, Amsoil Turbo Truck for CK4, various mineral diesel oils which Tata expects which these days are generally CI4+

Here you're comparing Mobil CK4 with Shell Rotella CK4 - both these aren't available in India just yet. Only Shell Rimula R4 (CI4+) and semi synthetic HX5 Diesel 15w40 (plain CI4) so far, and Delvac seems to still be CI4+. True that formulations and additive packages may make a well formulated Mineral better than a Synthetic blend (semi synthetic).

https://lubes.mobil.com/AP-English-L...ac-1-5w40.aspx so this isn't the Delvac you're talking about unfortunately. At least I haven't seen any CK4 Delvac as yet in the Indian market.

Re: All about diesel engine oils

Although my knowledge on oils has been enlighten with this ongoing thread, but it has left confused.

Oil change is due for my punto MJD. Now the option is either to stick to Selenia WR 5W40, as OEM oil OR switch to another brand.

But, unable to figure out which brand confirms to ACEA A3/B4 - Fiat 9.555535-N2 or API CF4 ? My concern is, I don't want to use an oil which is too higher in specifications which can lead to engine problems. Also higher specifications engine oil will not make much difference to the perfomance.

Besides Maruti recommends Mobil Super MGDO 5W40 which confirms to Fiat 9.555535 standards, but the oil change interval in Maruti with MJD's is 10,000 kms, while fiat recommends oil change at 15,000 km.

Hserus, your thoughts please

Re: All about diesel engine oils

Use any 5w40 a3/b4

Shell Helix Ultra 5w40 or Idemitsu in that rating

Re: All about diesel engine oils

Thanks hserus

I am contemplating between Liqui Moly Leichtlauf High Tech 5W-40 which is complies with A3/B4 and Fiat 9.555535-N2, but this product is not easily available.
Technical litreature: https://pim.liqui-moly.de/pidoc/P000...40-33.0-en.pdf

VS

Liqui Moly Leichtlauf HC7 5W-40, this complies with A3/B4, but not Fiat 9.555535-N2
Read Technical litreature: https://pim.liqui-moly.de/pidoc/P000...40-22.0-en.pdf

This one is easily available
