By Swift VDI has run 8000 Kms and yet to undergo its 1st oil change. I am getting a rough, coarse sound when I accelerate.

I need to know which oil do I go for?? and how much would it cost me?

I stay in Bangalore and I give it to Sagar motors for servicing? I also read in some thread that the Authorized dealerships do not allow you to use your own oil? So wanted to know if Sagar would allow me to use Synthetic oil of my choice?

I own a 1.8 ikon diesel which till now has been serviced at Ford i plan to get this serviced outside now and when i checked the manual it says that the oil to be used should be a 10w30 oil.

Does anyone know of any brand that markets a oil of this grade for diesel cars?

Well - My Swift has done approx 14K and I am contemplating a oil change along with a flush soon... (Plan to chnage the oil every 5-6K Kms so the next o/c will be at 20K-20.5K)

Here is what I found out after much research

- For swift DDIS recommended grade is 15W40 or better.
- MGP oil is Mobile Delvac 1300. In the M.A.S.S - it costs approx 890 /3.1 L
- I tried searching the markets in Chandigarh for various oils and here is what I could find

- Synthetic Oils
Brands Available - Shell Helix Ultra and Mobil 1
Both are of the grade 0W40 which is better than Maruti Recommended 15W40 (from the owner's manual I could infer that 0W40 is suitable for more severe operating temeratures and higer speed/load operations)
Pricing - Shell Helix Ultra (700/Litre - Available in 4 L packs), Mobil 1 (800/Litre - Available in 4L & 1 L packs) * I could not recall which one of these wasn't available in 1 L packs but as far as I remember it was shell.

I could find a old packing of mobile 1 for 2950 (without bargaining) which comes out to be 750/litre.

-Semi Synthetic Oils
Brands Available - Some product of Total 10W40 at approx 350/Litre

- Mineral Oils
Brands Available - Shell Helix Super, Mobil Delvac, Mobil 1300, Castrol, Motul, Total, Valvoline, Delo
- I am not looking at castrols since there is a high probability that they might be adultrated.
- Motul/Total/Valvoline also I am not looking forward to since I've not heard much about these brands and the reviews about them have been inconclusive.
-Shell Helix Super (Rs 800 /4L) - from the reviews It seems to be a pretty decent oil. But the problem with the 4L packs is what will I do with the rest of the oil - I am gonna use only 3.1 L ???
-Mobil Delvac (Approx the same cost as Shell Helix Super) - Good reviews - also recommended by MUL. Again comes in 4L packs.
-Mobil 1300 - It's the OE Oil for Swift - and comes in 3.5 Litre pack - Got a quote of 720/3.5 L.

My decision - the upfront cost of Synthetic oils is very high = 3 times the oil + filter change. Synthetic oils are recommened for prolongled high speed/extreme conditions - I drive mostly in city and that also in relatively low traffic conditions. I let the beast roar on highways with speeds touching 130+ but that too not for very long time. My Highway/City driving is 35%/65%. That will not classify the usage as extreme. Hence I'll stick to good mineral oils only. My choice will be Mobil 1300 (since it's pretty decent in performance - recommended by Maruti, and comes in a 3.5 L pack which means I buy only the amount which I need). However being a TBHPIAN - how can I not pamper my car??? I will be going for a engine flush. I find that the most commonly used flush is a brand called asso or arbo or arso (don't remember for sure, but can check it out).
Any recommendations for a engine flush???

This time I have put in the Delo400 oil for my VDI. This oil is CI + which I think is the best rating available in India.

It was recommended by a lot of diesel heads on the forum. The cost is 200 Rs / L.

However, it comes in a 10l bucket so initial investment is high, but the amount of oil is just right.

Hi Guys,

I have an Indica Vista TDI and the last time I went for servicing I casually asked what the price of oil change was( it was 5000 Km service and didn't require oil change) and he said for 5.5 ltrs it will be about 1200 Rs.

I believe TASC use castrol GTD which I believe is not good yet it costs around 200 Rs per Ltr so I am thinking during the 10000 service which will be my first oil change I will use Mobile Delvac which costs the same

Please let me know if its the best thing to do.

Cheers,
Nitin

TDI takes in 5.5 lit ?

That is a lot of oil, and expensive too at 200 a litre. What is the MRP of the oil in the open market ?

5.5 sounds right. my indica turbo which has the same engine takes in the same amount.

GTD prices seem to have risen ! cost 1k for 5.5L at my 15000k service. Since i went with delvac MX for fy 20000K service , i didnt notice the price rise.

if they wont let you use oil from outside, ask them to use GTX diesel, which costs a bit more and is a lot better

It's usually best to get your first oil change at less than 5000 kms for a diesel, helps clear out all the debris that result from the initial wearing in phase.

Tata Motors recommends only the following 3 oils

1)Castrol GTD 15W 40
2)HP MILCY 15W40 TGO
3)Mobil Super 1000 TM

Tata Motors Customer Care :: Recommended Products

Anyone has experience with the options 2 and 3?

They recommend Castrol GTX diesel for UVs so I think Sumo's and Safari's get Castrol GTX when they go for servicing.

Cheers,
Nitin

I'm running Delvac MX on my indica turbo now. car feels a bit rougher, but somehow i feel the power delivery is better at the same time (not sure if its mental hp at work).
I did a flush before changing the oil

Mental HP at work. I should be getting an engine oil change this weekend. I was considering Edge turbodiesel but sanity has prevailed and I shall be filling GTX D.
