The vacuum module that controls the rear head rests is under the rear seat. Maybe you have a leak that you should check out.

I've had this long standing problem of the E220 shutting off whenever I am coasting to a halt at a red light or even if I have to press the clutch for a very slow turn. The problem comes and goes, but it has become really bad these days. The idle isn't steady like it should be, and the engine isn't as silent as other E220's when the hood is open. On scanning, it gives some HFM error. I have suspected the LLR, but I have no way of knowing for sure, and I refuse to spend a five digit sum based on a hunch. Does anyone have any ideas?!

1. Check the Air Mass Sensor
2. Do a baseline tuning [Spark PLugs, Leads,]
3. So the standard check like OVP
4. Do a throttle body clean
5. Adjust the throttle cable

I would check all that before i jump into LLR; my friends E220 had exactly the same issues as you mentioned; over a period of time he did all the above 5; and now he does not have that issue.. so not really sure what worked

As far as noise; try and isolate from where the noise is coming; typical culprit is the FAN; and that needs a replacement

1. MAF sensor is fine. No codes, nothing. Even checked with a new one.
2. Spark plugs are 16000 kms old. Cables too.
3. All relays are fine. OVP is new.
4. Done 500 kms back.
5. Adjust the throttle cable to what? I have to get it changed, as the adjusting spring/nut is broken.

I HAVE done everything, it's why I'm suspecting the LLR. But what about the EGR. Does the E220 have one? Where?

Fan clutch was replaced in September last year. By noise I meant that the engine makes more noise while idling. Smooth and everything, just noise.

Re: Mercedes W124 E Class Support Group

All the OM 606 which were official imports through Tata did not had EGR and Catalytic convertors. Its the same with mine which was imported through Tata. I am yet to see a OM 606 TD in India through.

This is a M111 engine though. Maybe it was different for the petrol? My silencer fellow told me that the E220 does have a catalytic converter.

The wiring harness was replaced with a brand new one in August 2010. So, A+.

EDIT — Would you know where the EGR is located?!

Pretty straight forward guys and they know their stuff with Mercs.
I also bought my W124 E220 through them and also give my car there for all kinds of tweaks/service/repairs. They are competent on all kinds of car, especially the imported/luxury brands. I have seen them working with Porsche/Ferrari also. That said, 4 out of 5 cars I see in the workshop is a Merc, all kinds of them, from 190D to SLK350.

By any chance could that be coming from the rear antenna motor?

Nope the Chip on top of the antenna has been disconnected for a long time and it is not connected to a power source also.

Sure Sir I will send you the tables. I would scan the Pages of the owners workshop manual and upload it.

I think the rear is adjustable.

The rear is adjustable, but the regular guys don't touch it at all, because they don't know what to do. The best results will only be found if you go to the authorised service centre, but they charge about 4000 for wheel alignment. At least here in Delhi.
