Re: Mercedes W124 E Class Support Group

Does anyone know anyone here in Chennai who can take a look at my W124 E220. It might just need a basic service and a good look at the electricals.

Re: Mercedes W124 E Class Support Group

Guys, did a quick Pune - Thrissur, KL (1200km) trip on very short-notice last weekend due to Covid-19 situation. Since the traffic was light due to the lockdown, I mostly drove at 90-110 kmph. I used this drive for a tankful-to-tankful mileage test. 15.4kmpl. Not sure of the numbers in city traffic.

Slept in the car for about 5 hours too.

If I remember correctly you have a E250D, right? That's pretty good FE. I'm actually surprised it wasn't more! I had a E250D AT and I used to get around 13-14, so 15.xx is pretty good considering that you slept in the car as well.

Re: Mercedes W124 E Class Support Group

Hi all,

I am from Nainital, Uttarakhand, have bought a 25 year old W124 E220 (1996) in a good condition with all valid papers. Done 96k kms on odometer, Owned by some company in Luckhnow. Interiors is in also good condition. Front suspension is overhauled and bushes are changed(Blistin). AC is working great.

I need some help in fixing few things with her:

1. Throttle is hard, Do I need throttle cable replacement.

2. Gear oil grade and capacity.

3. Coolant grade and capacity.

4. Side mirror glass is faded and blue flat glass is there any replacement possible.

5. Rear bumper is cracked and missing a part. Where I can get in India or any ways do some fixing on it.

6. What are the important considerations for a car done around 1 lakh on ODO: Filters, Oil Changes, Plugs, Belts etc.

7. Parking brake is not holding up the vehicle on slope.

Any suggestions would be helpful!

PS: Sorry, if the questions are already answered on the forum.

Re: Mercedes W124 E Class Support Group

Hi Guys, I picked this 1988 W124 up recently. Some people have told me it used to be in Bombay and was for sale.
Does anyone have old pictures? It was black at that time with an AMG gen 1 kit.

Congratulations on the purchase!
  1. You need to lube the throttle linkage under the hood, as well as under the pedal. But even after that, don't expect a super light pedal like modern cars. Moderns cars are DBW, which don't require as much effort.
  2. The capacity is 1.1L and the oil to be used is ATF. Castrol TQ (Clear, not red) works pretty well.
  3. Flush the old coolant and replace with any good brand. Delphi, Golden Cruiser, etc. You'll need 4 litres of coolant and 4 litres of water.
  4. Glass replacement is possible, but may not be of good quality. The mirror is blue because of the anti-glare feature. You probably have salt water deposits on it - a quick Google search will help you with that.
  5. What part of it is cracked? The fix depends on that. You could try and get plastic welding done and cover the rest with body filler and paint.
  6. Replace all the fluids and filters (power steering fluid + filter, engine oil + filter, gear oil, differential oil), plugs, fan belt (also check the fan belt tensioner), check for signs of coolant around the water pump housing. The rest of the things like drive-shaft flex disc, suspension bushes, cosmetics, brake pads/discs, tyres, etc. can be done on a need-to basis.
  7. Do you have non OEM alloys? I ask because if the wheel bolts are too long, they cut the parking brake springs. Else there is an adjustable x-bar (don't know the term) roughly under where the centre console ends on the transmission tunnel which needs adjustment.

As a follow up to point 6, since you will need the grades of various oils:
  • Power steering - use Daimler Benz PS fluid only. (available in Delhi for around 800 a litre, you need 1 bottle).
  • Engine oil - 20W50 is what I've used for many years
  • Gear Oil - mentioned above
  • Differential oil - 90 grade hypoid gear oil
  • Spark Plugs - Bosch FR8DC4

Thank you soo much @Viraat13. Really appreciate your detailed response.

Currently the Coolant is of Blue colour, Is the same available in Delphi or Golden Cruiser, Sorry for asking such questions not much aware about different grades.

I'm gonna try from DIY for the salt water deposits on side mirrors.

Have posted few pictures of the broken rear bumper.

I'm having the OEM alloys only. I'll ask mechanic to look for the adjustment as suggested.

Is Bosch FR8DC4 spark plugs easily available?

The blue could be original Mercedes Benz as well. Does your car have a service record?

That bumper is going to need replacing. Try contacting the shops at Palika Bhawan in Delhi (Sood Motors, Rahul Motors, Arihant Auto) if you're lucky, they may have a Taiwan made bumper available. It should cost around 8-10K plus shipping. These shops should also have the other service items you need. Once you've crossed newbie status, send me a PM with your number and I'll add you on a W124 WhatsApp group that will help with sourcing these items.

The plugs should be available in Delhi, else Boodmo will have them. Here are some alternative options to Bosch F8DC4: NGK BCP6ES or BCP6E.

Edit: Car looks really good. The headlights need a bit of cleaning, and I think your hood stops need adjustment. But these are minor things. Enjoy the ride!

Re: Mercedes W124 E Class Support Group

Hey guys! I am looking to purchase H&R sport springs. It seems none of the shops in Mumbai who stock German parts , classic or otherwise ( Opera House ) keep them in stock and all talk about importing them. Can someone guide me as to where in Mumbai can I purchase them. Another help solicited is if a good independent mechanic who knows his w124s can be recommended , ideally in south or south central Mumbai. Many thanks in advance friends.

Re: Mercedes W124 E Class Support Group

Hi Friends,

after years of Hunting, finally going to have this beauty in my Garage! I want to keep her stock. This is a 1993, E 300 Diesel Automatic! Genuine 70,000 KMs

This Car was in Delhi till 2003 held by an embassy and then came to its current owner a septuagenerian Doctor couple who have been associated with the embassy, They have been owning only Mercedes cars from 1970. This car was Re-registered in TN in 2003. I fell in love with it once I saw the badge "Made in Germany" - That brought a huge Grin on my face.

I drove the car for a short distance and this was the second automatic I'm driving (My first automatic was Harrier, test drive). The owner and me were chauffeured for a long drive including a highway drive, I fell in love with it again, Man it was a rocket, Its rear seat comfort, was so good, I wanted to be chauffeured in this car.

The car is maintained by a trained mechanic closer to my home It was maintained by his father and now the son handles the car. They know every bit and pieces of this car. I'm happy again!!

The owner assured the car was accident free and every part and panel is original

This car may come home in 2 or 3 days, as I have made the payment in Cheque.

Coming to the negatives, as observed by me and also stated by the current owner:

1. The engine oil seeps into the coolant container and which inturn pushes the radiator hose out. The owner said, this happens only when the car is driven above 120 KMPH, The cars driver said this happens above 150Kmph. I suspect a mild crack in the engine head or will it be just a gasket issue?

2. I felt a jerk when the gear upshift and downshift, the driver said it is normal and it is not a problem, Guru's please advice.

3. I found few places of rust on the car and it needs tinkering, Actually the owner had left the car for tinkering and could not be done due to covid situation. The car was asked to returned as some chemical was placed on the bonnet and it has eroded the clear coat making a noticeable spot. Guru's again please advice - shall I repaint the car to the color of my choice to keep it in original color?

4. I always fancy the headlight wipers on the older Merc cars, but sadly it is missing in this current car and I need it badly The head light too are dull and need to be cleaned / changed for better illumination

5. Voila, there a sun roof, that is working, but need a hose to be fixed, the motors are working fine

6. The steering feels little heavy for me, I'm used to driving an Ertiga everyday. Can something be done make the steering feel lighter?

7. The driver seat is torn at the place where our body first meets the seat and it needs attention, I felt this is due to the age of the car. can I get a bespoke seat cover done in Alcantra leather?

Few pics for now:
