Oil color may vary however it is the consistency of the oil that is key. Ususally you change oil and the oil filter in the car every 5000 km.

Ways to make out if the oil has gone bad:
1) The oil is thick and rough in between your fingers when you rub it.
2) The oil stinks when you smell it usually is like a burned smell
3) If it is synthetic oil dont go by the color do the consistency and smell test. Synthetic oil is reccomended for a oil change at 10000 km. If you are moving from non-synthetic to synthetic please use an engine flush before changing the oil.

In a diesel engine, oil turns black right away and its normal.

In a petrol, it should be light brown and translucent. Black is not good.
