Some sort of chidchid sound has been coming from the bonnet of the Esteem for the past few days. Till today, it was hardly audible, but this morning it has got much louder. Wanted to ask, is this because of rain? Or is it a serious problem somewhere in the engine>??

EDIT: Read in the What Sound thread that this noise is from the engine belt, due to cold starts. So, is there a need of inspection by the MASS, or is it normal? (The noise intrigues me a lot, because it reminds me of the old Indicas and same sort of vehicles- No offence to Indica owners)

Needs details like how much KMS have you done & how old is your car...

Does the noise disappear when you accelerate,
Could be the timing belt.

Well, the car has run about 20,000 kms and is some 2years old. Is in a pretty good condition with timely services.

And yes, the noise does decrease a bit on accelerating.

From what you have mentioned, it does seem like the timing belt has worn out. But 20,000 kms is far too early for a wirn out timing belt. These usually last about 70,000-80,000 kms. Get it checked at a M.A.S.S.

Thanks for the replys people. I'm asking about its normality because I hear the same noise from lots of cars here in Haldia.
Yes, the car will be going to the service station, maybe today or tomorrow.
Once again, thanks.

Tighten your AC/Alternator belts or replace them, you should be fine. No need to touch timing belt at 20k kms.

Timing belts are usually enclosed, and are not exposed to vagaries of nature.
As esteem_lover puts it - it could be ac/alternator/power steering belt.

But I am not sure about your "chid-chid" description.
Usually the belts give a long screeching noise when they are worn out.

Well, its sort of a "discontinuous" screeching sound, meaning that the screeching has many split second pauses in between.

Update: The Maruti authorized station says that its just due to cold starts and will happen during monsoons.

Wanted to ask, does this thing happen only in MPFIs? Because our carb 800 has run for 10 years without any such noise...

No, it happens with only monkeys of Maruti Authorized Service stations in Haldia, WB. :p
Check if your belt is frayed. Ask them to check tension as per service manual and tighten if needed.
