Octavia 4 speed automatic

the gearbox is a 4 speed auto transmission... it refuses to shift beyond first gear after some hours of driving on regular highway or on the hills ... the car needs to be switched off for at least 20 minutes before switching it on .. after which the gearbox works absolutely fine for a couple of kilometers before acting up again... any help would really appreciated!!
