Baleno -Sound from steering column

I'm getting a 'khatack' kinda sound from the steering column of my baleno when going through rough roads, and i could feel the impact of small potholes on the steering.

My baleno has run around 80k till date.

Has any of the baleno owners faced this issue ? Please give your suggestions and possible cause for this issue.

Common issue with Balenos. Search the forum. You'll get info on it.
My car has it too. The sound occurs specially if the steering is turned while going through rough roads. Some steering damper issue IIRC. Never goes away fully or so I've heard.

Isolate it to steering column and if its that one then better to leave with it unless you are ready to spend about 15k to replace it outside. dont know MASS quote.

Drive the car on a bad road in a downhill slope, slam the brakes, then turn the steering column on the move in the 1st gear & this sound will crop up.

When you drive over few of the sharp stones on the road, do you feel the vibration coming up all the way?

No issues with our Baleno. Our Baleno has done 38K kms. including rough roads too ( one trip to MP ). We are yet to hear a single sound from the steering column.
Steering damper is the culprit ( my opinion ).

had some strange groaning sound coming when I turned steering hard right or left, taking out of the garage in the morning. Took to Chowgules, power steering was suspected, but it was thouroughly checked and passed with flying colours. They sprayed some WD-40 in the steering column, (where they did not tell me) and so far the sound has not returned. Cost - FOC.

Can think of a dozen things that make that kind of noise. Some are:
  1. Tie rod end
  2. Steering ball joint
  3. Worn shock absorber strut
  4. Worn steering rack mounting bush
  5. Worn anti-roll bar ends
  6. Worn anti-roll bar bushes
  7. Split steering column bush
You just need a good mechanic to diagnose the source of the noise first.
