Does your Maruti Swift speedo over-read?

My VDi is optimistic by about 7-8%

I got myself the Holux yesterday. I was aghast to see that its clearly having a +ve error!

I've noticed it consistently over almost 50+km, so want to know what others have felt. For the naysayers, fret not, a screen shot + pic will come by tomorrow.

I want to benchmark it this weekend against Punto, Palio and Vista.

Measurement with respect to my E71 GPS also showed a similar error.

Hitanshu, so you expected zero error in your Swift speedo or is this way higher than what you thought it would be?

And why would you like to benchmark?

Since you haven't mentioned it explicitly can we presume that your VDi is still on stock tires ?

Many cars' speedo over read. The error goes up as the speed increases. This is most pronounced in Marutis and Hyundais I think.

Once I noticed this when two of our cars going together at the same speed, Palio speedo read 80 Kmph while the Santro speedo read almost 90. (Communication through cell phone

)

I noticed that my Punto's speedo also has a positive error, compared to Palio's.

possibly all road going cars speedometers over or under-read.
many things can contribute - air-pressure in the tyres, temperature, road conditions, tyre size differences (up-sizing/downsizing), alloy wheels vs stock wheels,
state of maintenance of the bearings and a host of other such things.
I would say that the variance would normally be +/- 5%-7% at a conservative estimate.

After upsizing my indica tires from 165 to 185 the speedo shows exact speed as my GPS.

Even laura, superb accord also over read. I think these speedos are designed keeping in mind different tyre profiles and once the cars come to India we get super skinny tyres so they over read.

Because I can. . . because I'd like to know! And because at some level it reminds me that on this forum people earlier used to mention that palio MJD gets 16-17 or so only (except Bubby), while swift gets 19-20 easily.

If palio doesn't overread then that knowledge is useful.

I knows. But my car is stock. And pressure was checked on Monday night (incl my own gauge)!

@Techno: I am aware. I am just surprised that Maruti is taking the Bajaj way, not the Hero honda way.

Speedo overread is present in all cars(5-7%)
However your FE readings will be incorrect if your odo overreads
For example Original Palio Odo under-read. Due to which people read FE as 1-2kmpl lower than what it actually was!

Yes, it does by around 5-10%.

Even my Hyundai Santro & i10 over read by around 5%.

Hey Hitanshu... lets test it on my MJD, but not on weekend yaar.

I am game for it for today and tomorrow, today any time between now and 2100 hours, tomorrow any time between 0900 - 2100 hours.
