Fiat Palio 1.2 Sport 2002 Suspension & Odometer Query

I have been driving a Fiat Palio 2002 1.2 Sport for about a year now, previously owned by a relative and was single owned, mildly driven. It has been a pleasure driving the car and contrary to most beliefs upgrading or changing to another car is a dilema since I don't see any car with all the feature as the palio.

1) Anyway, last month i sent it across to the authorized service stations, once of the issues that i noticed was a knocking sound on the left side suspension or wheel. I was told that the rack and suspension assembly needs to be changed since it has given way and is resulting in the power steering to feel heavy. The cost that I am told is 18k and will take about 2-4 days with the guys at the service station.

2) The odometer has stopped functioning and they say the entire assembly needs to be replaced and have quoted 14k for the same.

Overall the car is in fantastic condition..

Any suggestions before I go in for the change/s.

Please advise

1.2 sport ? It must be 1.6 sport or someone has messed with the badging.

Palio experts please guide us through this. I too want this to be answered.
Thanks a lot. One of my friend tried repairing it in the regular service but the suspension problem props up after 1-2 weeks later. It is rough and nasty when fully loaded.
Is this inherent or just typical in some Palios ?

Yes, there existed a 1.2 Sport. It had alloys & rear spoiler just like the 1.6.

I have the knocking sound from my right front suspension for about an year now. It is heard when an bump is negotiated at a good speed. I have been told by more than one service guys that it's ok to live with that until I change my lower arm.

Your front suspension arms are probably shot...(common with most palios) they should not be more than 3.5 k. Also get the wheel bearings changed and the tie rods also.
I would be surprised if your total bill was more than 10k if you get all this done from a good local mechanic.
For the odometer, try and source a second hand one from CST Road Kurla in Mumbai.
Why would you spend 32k for a car which is worth 1 or 1.2 lakhs max?

Hrish, in Pune & Mumbai there are quite a few good Fiat specialists, it checked from them.
As regarding the odo, is it just the odo thats gone with the speedo working, or the whole unit. If both the meters are not working, it might be that the cable has gone kaput.

Again, get a second opinion from a FIAT specialist

Hrish, I own a 2003 Palio Sports, which also had the speedometer issue. The BU Bhadari diagnosis suggesting cluster change for 14K. However with some connecting with local garages , managed to get the problem rectified in 2K.

The issue was sensor cable and calibration of meter (done at some firm in Narayan Peth). Please contact Sanjay Ghorapade - Nirmal Cars (9822784422, 020-25387435)

There was 1.2 Sports (2002 pre-NV edition model). My cousine has 1.2 Sports. But there is no alloy wheel in that but has spoiler.

He had lower arm issue. He got it replaced for 3000.

He also had similar issue with odo/speedo. A.S.S told to replace same for 14K. But he went to local speedo repair guy and got it fixed for some 500 rupees. But it stopped after couple of days.

So he decided to open the speedo console He found that there was contact miss between multi layer PCB. He fixed it and everything back to normal. Its working perfectly fine now
