Hi,

Recently i was suggested by friend to install a Electronic Distributorless Ignition System (EDIS) on my carb zen to improve FE and Performance. I asked how is the ignition system related to FE & Performance of car. He started giving out jargon which i could not understand and said would think about it.

I tried searching for the topic on THBP and other sites, but i didnt really understood the entire concept and that if the same is only meant for carb or is for MPFI engines too.

Would need some gyaan from the techies and gurus here to help me understand the EDIS concept, its benefits, disadvantages, etc etc please:

EDIS on a carbed car:Shockked:. YOU need a control unit to handle timing and the distribution of the spark. an electronic ignition with a electronic distributor is what you need.
EDIS need a timing single that has to be generated from a crank and/or cam sensor pulse and a signal from an ECU to calculat the actual control signal.

dar3dev|l what your friend suggested must be an Autoescorts kit to convert your current CB point dstributor ignition to a more trouble free electronic setup. IIRC the Auto escorts kit come with independent HT coils for all four sparkplugs, so it is a kind of distributor less ignition system. BUT it still need the distributor housing to place the electronic pickups. In this case what the distributor does is trigger each HT coil according to the engine timing and not distribute the spark like traditional distributors.

What you would probably gain from this conversion is more reliability - no need to clean and set CB points periodically, and probably stronger spark which could add a bit to efficiency.

thnx shankar, that gets me a better picture. However, if the setup gives the advantage of better FE, why isnt it famous across the carb car owners. I guess everyone looks for a better FE :D
