Please advice on what might have gone wrong.
This could be a problem with the throttle position sensor. Do the rpms stay constant at 3000 at idle?

Thanks Tanmay,
The rpm fluctuates between idle and 3000 rpm (even in neutral).Clutch operation is normal.

What is the solution and how much should it cost ?

You can get it checked with a multimeter. Hopefully all it may need is some adjustment. The fact that the rpm varies suggests a fault rather than an adjustment problem but hopefully I'm wrong. I'm not exactly sure of the price, the tp sensor often comes as a part of the throttle body assembly and isn't exactly cheap. If you do indeed need a replacement, try to shop around for the sensor alone and it might be cheaper that way.

Also, there's a wealth of information on tp sensors on team bhp itself. Browsing through some of these old threads might help.

Your IACV or Idle control valve could be stuck open due to water ingress to the IACV socket or carbon buildup . If this is ok then look at the throttle sensor as well.

+1.

I'd also recommend cleaning the Throttle Body and the MAP/MAF sensor.

Re: Honda City VTEC issues

Thank you for your valuable suggestions.
Heard from the SA at Magnum honda, yeshwantpur . The throttle vacuum pipe was punctured (suspected intrusion by rats) and thus the rpm fluctuations.
It is temporarily fixed until and a new part has been ordered .
