You should be Ok with 20W50, only it is thinner when cold.

Respected Sir, I have tried but doesnt work properly , thease old machines are recomended to run on sae 50 ( specially Yezdi/jawa ), I am using Yezdi form 1985 , 5th dec to be precise & used it for a lakh of km. ( not much for those bikes ) it is still on the original clutch plates. It ran very smoothly on Castrol GP 50, since then no oil has matched that performance.
My observations are
1) Yezdi/jawa are not comfertable on any 2T oils ( overheat, rattle )
2) new type of multigrades do not get mixed up with petrol properly.
3) as far as the Land Rover is conserned I have observed following
a) I am using No.40 monograde ,with some kind of oil saver kind of dose
( ocassionaly)
b) Multigrades dont work properly (rattle ,noise , overheat )
4) In Yezdi if a 20/50 is used , clutch & gearchange are not comfortable.
So I am using 70% of normal oil + 30% of 90 EP oil, so far it is working
properly,( for about 20,000 km )
Now I am thinking of attachment like oil pump/ external feed for Yezdi engine ( as mixing of 20/50 with petrol is not working properly)
Thanks for reply
Yours Sudarshan Vaidya

Motul and Castrol have SAE 50 oils available in the UK for classic cars/motorcycles. Sourcing the oil from there should be possible but the costs will probably be prohibitive.

IIRC some marine engines also need SAE 50 grade oil - do check with people familiar with those.

@Sudarshan: I am surprised by your statement, but I guess the engine is a 2-stroker. Then a multigrade WILL not work. Yes SAE90 is what your EP oil is, can be mixed with SAE40 to jack up the viscosity.

Sir, will you please clearify which 'statement ' surprised you ? (I am confused)
More clarifications
1) I am mixing the said sae 40 with the sae 90 , for the gearbox of the Yezdi/jawa, ( not for the engine ) . The manufacturer has recomended sae 50 for the gearbox as well as engine !
2) the Yezdi/ jawa I have Are 2 stroke machines, ( Yezdi is 85 production & the Jawa is a 50 production bike )
Thanks for your reply , Sudarshan.

Sudarshan,

this is what we need (I have a jawa twin).

Motul Classic Oil SAE 50 - Oils and Fluids Car Preperation rallying parts for rally cars

Motul Classic Oil SAE 50
Specially formulated all engines of collector cars built before 1950. Suitable for gasoline or Diesel 4 stroke engines. Also suitable for collector bike engines.

PERFORMANCE MOTUL CLASSIC MOTOR OIL is an high performance oil specially designed for old technology engines.
High lubricating power which reduces internal frictions
High film strength available, even in severe conditions
Very low detergency, does not attack seals (TBN : 1.4). Totally inert towards seals used in the past.

SAE 50 viscosity grade adapted to vintage cars or bikes.

Now where in India/Bangalore can we get our hands on this?
