Hi,

We are importing an old Ferrari Testarossa from London and we were wondering if there is anywhere in Delhi that may be able to handle the service for this car also any gremlins that may come up given the time it will take to ship it over.

The car stays on a drip charger in the garage it is stored in, in London and I am sure getting it started once it arrives will be a challenge.

Please help so that we can keep the beauty running.....

JD

Is it even allowed to Import a car that is so old.?

OT but can we have some pics of the car?:D

I could recall only these guys. Though, I've not personally used any of their services, I've heard they do clean business. Did you try approaching them?

I'm not too sure because I'm not from Delhi but isnt Patel Auto quite reputed to handle expensive cars?

I don't know about Delhi, but here's an excerpt that might shed some more light on the situation :

"Amazingly, there is one qualified Ferrari technician in the country, who is trained at handling the more modern Ferraris. Kersi has trained at Maranello and is equipped with specialised tools (like the SD1 computerised datalogger) that are usually given only to dealers. Kersi insists on frequent fuel filter changes as well as regular cambelt replacements. And while regular service may sound simple, don’t forget you need to pull the F355’s engine out to execute a textboox cambelt change! Of course, nothing less than 95 Octane with a decent peg of octane booster will do."

SOURCE (Note that its a rather old article!)

I'd be more scared of the gremlins in the customs and clearings department! Goodluck (and pics please!)

I actually remember reading that article, still have that issue around with me. "Red Indians".

Great :) !!

Luca Di Montezemolo confirmed that Ferrari will open in India this year -
BBC News - Ferrari boss bullish on firm's future

So hopefully the Ferrari dealer will help you out in case the car shows its "character" :D

Please keep us updated with the formalities required.

OT - Is the tax rate still ~180% on used cars or the conditions/rates have been revised?

ir458 : Mate Ferrari dealers never accept the cars sold out side the dealership.
If they does they charge huge amount from the owner to open a new file for warranty and this is only possible if it is approved from the head office in italy.
Yes we do the same here.

Firstly, congrats on owning a true Italian-bred Classic.

1. Why don't you get it completely serviced before shipping the car to India? Finding Ferrari support in the UK will be easy. I'd recommend getting all maintenance work completed, and only then load her onto the ship.

2. Would be a great idea to stock up on common maintenance / replacement parts.

3. Get hold of a competent customs clearing agent. The capability of this agent will dictate whether the clearing process (at our docks) is a dream or nightmare for you.

I believe used cars can be imported from the Mumbai port only. If you need someone to drive it to Delhi, we'd be only too happy to oblige :D

Guys,

Car has reached Delhi and is now sitting in the garage - unfortunately all the tales about Customs are correct it took nearly 4 months to get it thru - however problem is that it is refusing to start. Battery is fully charged and the fuel pumps are working - starter motor is turning but the engine is not turning - anyone has any ideas or contacts for someone that we can speak to so that we can get the redhead on the road. Also to clarify its a 512m - the update on the testarossa that was sold in the 90s.

PLS assist - need to get it working!!

JD

Is the engine not turning or firing. If the latter, you need to check engine connections. You might find a rodent might have nibbled something during the 4 month storage

Jaidev, I suggest you get in touch with Tutu Dhawan. Take a look at his thread here. A genius with yesteryear cars & an industry veteran. Drop him a PM / Email (from his profile page)

The engine is not turning over? Or the engine is not firing?

I'm assuming you mean the latter. I guess its best to start with the basics here.

Step 1 - Are you getting spark?

(Sorry if its too basic a question - but sometimes smaller things can be overlooked :) )

can we import old cars? that was my first question.
