Palio 2002 - Electricals - Lights Turn On When Key Is Off

2002 palio 1.2. Wierd problem.

Reversing the car to get it out of the parking spot.
All of a sudden, car stops.
Now the car does not crank. But even wierder is the fact that when I remove the keys, the electricals, lights etc switch on.
If I turn the key to the crank position, the electricals remain on but does not crank.
There is a midway position where the electricals switch off.

The only abnormal thing I did before this happened, is:
Tried to remove some petrol from the tank for another vehicle (long story) and
put a plastic pipe all the way into the fuel tank. (Did take it out, since i
sucked in more vapor than petrol). The car did crank right after that.

Any insights are welcome. Right now I have disconnected the battery. The electrician will be coming by noon, but need to guide him.

the accessory mode near the key hole get activated by any chance? how did it stall? did it shutdown on its own? or it could be the connections near the key hole.

You are kind of accurate. It is an ignition key assembly issue. The electrician came by and he can start the wire by shorting wires.
Now the ignition assembly is turning out to be very expensive.
Some 1800 for the plastic holding and 1200 for the lock and key assembly.
The electrician has asked for time to see if he can do some jugaad.
Any bright ideas or has anyone replaced their palio ignition key assembly?

(One reason this could have happened, is that I had a duplicate key made recently. Maybe the guy who made it jammed up something!)

Can someone guide me as to where the fuel cutoff switch for a palio 1.2 EL may be located and how to reset it?

The best solution - donot go for a juggad - get peace of mind and go for an OE replacement.

all the best.

Was wondering if it was preventing the key from being operated if it had tripped. But the mechanic can start the car using wires so it does not seem to be the case

Hi Planet Rocker
Peace of mind if the OE will be in stock :P

I had issue with the headlight switch and the electrician removed the whole part and cleaned it properly and it started to work.

Posting The Solution:
The ignition key assembly was faulty. I had made a duplicate key a few days ago and apparently that caused a part of the assembly to short out.

Driver got a second hand ignition key assembly from Kurla CST (Bharatiya Auto) (it is a black cylinder with the key assembly at the end) and it was fitted. Works like a charm.
Only irritant is that I now have two keys. One for the doors and the other for the ignition.

Re: Palio 2002 - Electricals - Lights Turn On When Key Is Off

Dear Genesis,

Posting this 2 years late, but hope its of use to others. I had the same problem starting this week, remove the keys lights on. The culprit was a damaged lever inside the lock assembly & faulty connector. A circular device that connects to the other circular part having slots for accessory activation.

Solution-
Second hand ignition was bought from Chor bazaar and the connector was removed. You dont get connectors as spare. The lever was made by the lock smith. Replaced the faulty connector and it works. One key for the entire car.

Total damage- INR 1300 which is the cheapest bet, considering a new barrel itself costs 1800 + labour.
