Turbo...what's that?

Folks,

If you promise not to hate me for being probably one of the most ignorant ones around, may I ask something...

What is this 'Turbo' thing. I have read people mentioning something like..."When the Turbo kicks in, the car is a real pleasure to drive". So what's it, how does it 'gets kicked'?
