But, isn't gear/transmission linked to the engine in FWD cars. So, if tow away guys pick the car front wheels up, nothing should be ruined in that case!

But not all inexpensive cars are FWD! Take Omni and Nano, for instance. I am asking in general - do they take any precautions before towing?

well sadly yours was an alto, thus towed. These days what i have observed is that "expensive" cars are not towed but their tyres are locked.

I once asked the towing fellow, as to why my 98 Zen was towed and the ANHC right behind me was tyre-locked ? To which the smarty answered, "the towing van has capacity to tow only one four wheeler and yours was a smaller car". I was speechless !!!

Cops most of the time tow with the front wheels lifted off the road, so it doesn't matter whether the car is parked in-gear (assuming the gear locks only the front wheels).
For cops, it is difficult to tow with the front wheels ON the road because somebody would need to break-in to the car to control the (locked) steering.

Car towed away by traffic cop with the handbrake engaged!!-imageuploadedbyteambhp1405600130.599743.jpg

This is not a German and definitely not towed on a flat bed. But saw this picture of the Landcruiser being towed to the local PS by the traffic towing truck in today's TOI and the state of the front bumper made me cringe. Didn't get any appropriate thread to post it.
