VW Polo - Bad plastics and rubber quality - German just by name??!

My Dad was on a lookout for a Premium Hatchback. He loved the Punto but I was not happy with "not-so-good" quality of plastics. I suggested him to keep his decision pending.

When VW launched the Polo, I immediately gave my Dad a go ahead to buy the "German built" Polo even though there were lots of Horror stories of Showroom experience and waiting period. He got the Polo after less than four months wait period in October.

Yesterday I saw the Polo after a month and I was shocked to see the bad plactic quality. Even the door rubber beading has started to tear. All plastics turning white!!! When the bonnet is opened, the wiper touches the bonnet and the paint is scratched. Its a black Polo and lots of swirl marks around already.

I suggested him the Polo just for better plastic quality compared to Punto. But my decision was BAD. Note that the car is sparingly used and parked in an Apartment basement in Bangy. Its not parked in any extreme heat conditions nor is it washed daily.

There is nothing GERMAN about this car. Just in India made German type car with all plastics of below par quality.

Now its time to visit the VW Service station. Wish me good luck.

That looks really bad. Wonder if you got a lemon!
Any of the other owners have similar experiences to share on the plastics?

That looks scary!!!

The whitish deposit on plastics is due to hard water. Who is washing your car? By the way, the paint chipping off from the bonnet is due to opening the bonnet when wipers are pulled off the glass!! ( at least that is what I realized).

The door beadings indeed are looking scary, its unbelievable!!! Ask the *** to replace them ASAP!!

Cheap plastics and rubber beadings is all I can think of. Why don't you write to VW directly and send them these pictures, there is little the dealer would do about such things unless directed by the company itself.

Why don't you check with fellow Polo owners to see if they experience the same problem with the plastics ?

The right wiper cannot be pulled off the glass because there is simply no space to pull it out!!!

Re: VW Polo - Bad plastics and rubber quality - German just by name??!

My neighbor bought a Polo a few weeks back and he too noticed the bonnet and wiper issue. He laughed it off saying, I dont need to open the bonnet frequently like you do with your old cars. I stepped out and checked the plastics. I see some signs of whitening, not to the extent seen by Green Day. Will check with him tomorrow on the rubbers.

Considering the cost and reputaion, I feel these small niggles are really sad.

That looks really bad from the photos. My doubt is also about whether this is a rare case or all the Polo's are like this ! I have also advised friends to look no further than VW for the quality of materials used.

Does your Figo also have the whitish deposits on the black plastic parts?

GreenDay
I think the Whitish deposit on the black plastics happens due to the water in Bangalore.
My Figo has the same problem. All the black unpainted plastics have become whitish like this.

The Door beading seems like a wearing off. I would get it changed under warranty. Check the other door beading to see its happening else where.
Also check the boot area beading for similar problems.

My dad' old car-Maruti Alto 2004 model never had issue with bangy water. The bumper plastics, door handles and plastics near wiper was jet black even when we sold it last month.

The rubber beading was top class. No water leaks too. Hats off to Maruti to deliver top class products. Learn VW learn!

If its the problem with Bangy or Indian water, I think VW should write a caution note like:--

Caution: Bangalore water may not be suitable for Polo. Please contact the dealer and get it imported from Germany.

One more question.. did VW ever test the bonnet?? looks insane to me. Wipers can't be pulled off the glass and if bonnet opened, wiper scratches the bonnet. I guess Polo needs a single wiper like Etios.

This is really sad. Is this being seen on all Polo's? My colleague's Figo also has this plastic fading problem. This is also a black car and these faded plastics look quite bad.

This really is very sad. Please don't feel bad but my 10 yrs old Matiz has little better plastics compare to the photo. Though I don't wash it quite frequent but still, I don't think it's due to water issue.

Keep us posted on your visit to a dealer.

Re: VW Polo - Bad plastics and rubber quality - German just by name??!

Captain:

It does not now, I arrived at it by trial and error .

Greenday:

Yes on a second look the second wiper does seem to be obstructing the bonnet if it is opened and vice versa. Is it like that for all Polos? If it is indeed, then ..... well I dont have words :(

Greenday, the whitish deposit definitely is due to water and how we clean our vehicle. It is a different matter that the Old M800 did not show such signs. Put some nice dashboard polish on the plastic trims. And what are you planning on this? Please keep us posted!

Re: VW Polo - Bad plastics and rubber quality - German just by name??!

I am not convinced. The car is either badly maintained or has some specific quality issues. To me it looks more like a damage from a harsh chemical or detergent. My Polo is 6.5 months old and plastics are shining as new.So please don't jump in to conclusions and blame the manufacturer.
The wiper issue has been discussed umpteen times on the forum and has mechanism to move it to service position
