How does spark plug gap affect mileage?

Today I had taken my Baleno for mileage test, I was a little concerned about the drop in mileage after the 2nd service.

After 30 minutes the mechanic returned the car saying he adjusted the plug gap and cleaned some dirt, etc. Then he said check the mileage again, it should improve.

How exactly does plug gap affect mileage?

On a baleno??? It beats me..
But during my good old school days, I used to do on my bike. There it was a hasslefree and cheap way of adjusting the firing timing. Closer the gap, earlier it fires and more intensed will be spark, good for rich mixtures and more power (2 stroke), and other way round too
