Innova [?steering] noise question

hi guys,

A friend has an Innova which he bought recently. It makes a kind of 'whoosh' noise when the engine has just been started and the steering is turned completely to one direction.

is this normal? Something to do with the power steering?

Thanks.

Re: Innova [?steering] noise question

Most cars with Hydraulic Power steering make a hissing noise when the wheel held at lock on both sides. The question is how loud is this sound? Compare it to another car of the same make.

^^ +1 some make nice woosh sound, like the iKON which is quite normal. Still a comparison would be good, just to rule out any issues. Then again its a Toyota nothing much can go wrong so soon.

Yes, it is quite normal for an IKON.

I have one question: Is it advisable to hold the steering in full lock (whist that sound heard) for longer durations for any PS car?.

Re: Innova [?steering] noise question

Dhanushs, It is not adivsable to hold the steering at full lock for more than 30 secs as the PS pump is at the maximum pressure. Regular full locks for long duration can rupture the pump's seal.

+1

It is also advisable to avoid (when possible) the 'TAK' sound of the full lock on either side. With the full lock the seal can lose its life faster.

Re: Innova [?steering] noise question

Apparently its the ABS motor undergoing a self test when you start. It also kicks in when you hit the brakes on a slippery patch. As per the instruction manual.

Re: Innova [?steering] noise question

My error. apparently it's not always on full lock, and happens otherwise too. Just that he does a full lock to get out of his parking spot every morning/evening, and thought it was on full lock.

He later noticed it [same noise] when ABS kicked in when braking on sand and read this in the manual too.
