re: Review: 2nd-gen Hyundai Verna (2011)

Great review Zappo!

Just wish you could post the 0-100 times and roll-on times of both the versions you drove.

My thoughts on the pricing:
Just like the upper B segment hatches, Jazz > Polo > i20 (spec to spec). Absolute i20 prices are higher, I know.

In the same way, I see the pricing as ANHC > Vento > Verna. However, given that the base Vento is too spartan, the base Verna would cost more than the base Vento.

I foresee the Honda > VW > Hyundai pricing heirarchy to continue.

Not sure how everyone is so excited about this launch.

I would rather drive my old zen without PS
and the low rear seating position, the lack of under thigh support...... The list can definitely go on. But the kind of convenience features, engine options it offers and the lack of the same in some current market leaders coupled with Hyundai A.S.S. brings excitement.

The excitement may vanish if Hyundai sticks to the pricing policy they adopted for the old Verna.

Welcome sticking to the old zens, altos, swifts, etc. etc. One may also read the thread on "Lateral upgrades" in Team BHP, which I think is a very useful one (as many others are).

Interestingly, this bucks the global trend. Globally, Pricewise: VW > Honda=Toyota > Hyundai. However, Jazz is costlier than Polo even in the UK.

In Pune, Sanjay Hyundai has bookings open. The Sales guy quoted a price range of 9-11L for the new Verna RB as it is being called.

re: Review: 2nd-gen Hyundai Verna (2011)

Zappo, this is a great review and it has definitely created some chaos for me....The New Fiesta Sedan (which I have booked) or the new Verna RB, which looks so attractive too ?

One very noticeable external feature which I really liked in the Verna is that the boot of the new Verna is very well integrated in comparison to the Fiesta's (which is positioned at a rather steep incline).

The previous generation Verna used to wobble at higher speeds. Hope this issue has been addressed to some extent.

I would at least like a TD of the new Verna. If the handling is anywhere close to the Fiesta, this may wean many Ford fans to the Hyundai club.

The last time I TD'd a Hyundai vehicle, it was the i20. Even with all the add-on stuff, it failed to make a mark in the driving dynamics department. i20 owners may differ, but these were the observation of a person who does not look under the bonnet each day to admire the sight of the engine.

What matters is that the car should be an enjoyable, reliable, fuel efficient and comfortable drive with minimal maintenance. And yes, the way the car handles is a very important parameter.

@Abhi: Agree with you. That way the Indian market w.r.t to Honda prices and positioning is rather unique. Nowhere else would we see a Honda commading a premium over a VW!

As for Hyundai, they understand how much price their brand can command. So, in developed western markets, they inevitably undercut other brands. If they can draw a premium in India due to their relatively old presence in the country. Put this way, there is no stigma in buying a Hyundai the way it use to be in Europe till a few years back.

re: Review: 2nd-gen Hyundai Verna (2011)

The new Verna is a very attractive proposition indeed! Things that struck me (a Vento TDI HL owner) are:-
- 6 speed gearbox & the Engine: Very impressive. I felt the Vento TDI needed a 6 speed, while cruising on the highway. With even more power/torque under its hood, the Verna surely deserves 6speed. Need to see the gear ratios, though.
- 16" Alloys: Perfect shoes.
- Central Locking: The Vento's CL is an absolute sucker. In the Verna pics, I found a manual knob (in chrome, next to the door lever- much like i10/i20). Neat:- & safe too.
Goodies: USB/DVD/AUX media player, Wooden touches (looks classy), Leather seats & inserts, & the compete "keyless" experience.
These are distinct advantages for the Verna, over and above the similarly priced Vento & ANHC. If only it could handle aswell as a Vento/Linea/Fiesta, this would be a no-brainer. The upcoming Fiesta would make the upper C segment market absolutely dymanic & hot. We might see old players like City and some players who are already struggling (Linea) falling apart & soon find themselves out of the race even!

re: Review: 2nd-gen Hyundai Verna (2011)

This is excellent..!
Hyundai designs are improving with their every new launch from i10, i20, Santa Fe and now the Verna.
Even the new Sonata/ i45 also carries the same sort of the family look.
Even the Elantra available in the US markets has the same sort of look and feel.

I would not be surprised if they make their way into the Indian market soon.
Lets wait and watch.

I also feel, that the ANHV will take away from its diesel rivals esp. VW Vento and Fiesta.
All is down to pricing and subsequent pricing of the Fiesta..!

Zappo, nice review. Enjoyed reading it. The ANHV not only looks rich and sporty but also has a long list of equipment list. The four engine options should give buyers ample options to choose from. Can't think of any other car in India (in this category) that was launched with 4 engine options. Another first of its kind I guess.

re: Review: 2nd-gen Hyundai Verna (2011)

Great Review from Zappo. The ANHV is rich in features and will definitely be a class leader like the other Hyundai cars. Hyundai should consider changing the steering wheel on ANHV as have previously seen this one on i20 before.

Panel gaps are not welcome. It has a close resemblance to i10 Kappa2 and i somehow feel they share the head lamp unit. The new color seems inspired from the Tata Manza ad and Hyundai can say "We Have".

re: Review: 2nd-gen Hyundai Verna (2011)

That sounds like winning drums to me...

If they price this car aggressively, there is a very good chance they can eat into Honda's market share. Its no secret that Honda/ Toyota are suffering from parts shortage due to production disruption in Japan. All the players of C segment would be looking to utilise this opportunity. I feel with a new model, Hyundai has a slight upper hand here. Its all about playing their cards right.

re: Review: 2nd-gen Hyundai Verna (2011)

Wonderful review Zappo. This car will definitely cause sleepless nights to Honda and VW. Honda enjoyed their honeymoon period till VW came with the Vento. VW is already facing issues with long waiting periods and higher maintenance cost. It's just about edging in front of Honda.

This has great looks, amazing engine options, feature loaded and decent space. Coupled with hyundai's better after sales compared to Honda and VW this will seriously dent the Vento and City's monthly figures.

Trying to figure out the on road prices in Bangalore. The i20 CRDi Asta i.e. fully loaded costs 8.4L on road whereas the Sportz CRDi costs 7.6L. If the 1.4L CRDi Verna is going to be a basic model they will probably price it a little above the i20 Asta i.e. around 8.6-8.8L on road bangalore. This will ensure that the i20 Asta is not hurt but at the same time tempting for a prospective buyer of i20 Asta to upgrade to a sedan.

The 1.6L will probably be above 10L on road infact may even be above 11 similar to the Vento diesel.

Cant agree more. The first thing about a car is safety most of it is governed by handling. I can say for sure Zen has one of the best driving dynamics among all hatches and numerous sedans. Recently sold off my Zen for a preowned Palio (its the 3rd car of the Family). But still the Low CG of Zen makes you feel in complete control.

I would better be in either Zen or Palio than in Verna. The old Verna was unstable and nervous. And this had been my worst fear in this new model.

And a 1.6D sports for Verna just wont work. It is not only stiffer suspensions that matter. You need to have a good chasis, low CG and lot of other factors. The ideal oil burner for an enthusiast would be a Vento with tweaked suspension (it has got the chasis), a pete's box and a 6 speed MT.

re: Review: 2nd-gen Hyundai Verna (2011)

Firstly great review. Hyundai have a winner on their hands. The car looks very nice and very modern, kind of cool actually !

This car is a jack of all trades, but a master of none type, which is why it will definitely be a hit with the general car buying public. Handling beyond 130 kmph is in no way a deal breaker for most people.

Lets see how the New Fiesta compares to this. Buyers in the 8-10L category are certainly spoilt for choice.

Zappo! A very neat review.

You have commented about Turbo lag in diesel!

Did you get a petrol 1.6 from Hyundai? Tell us something about driveability, initial pick-up etc. about the petrol 1.6; some mag reviews had pointed towards coarseness of new Gamma unit.
