Dear friend, have an eagle eye and check whether some one else is getting their deliveries above you. Infact, the delay is not that much. I booked a VDi and got an ZDi instead in 2 months time. No bribe, no influence at all. Popular Trivandrum did not even insist on buying even a single accessory, and I did not buy anything other than a horn and mat to be precise. Clean deal. But the car was despatched a day before the strike began.

With same production status & persistent MSIL Strikes again & again, I don't think that my New Swift will arrive atleast before March2012 & I can't wait for that much long as I need the car much earlier i.e. most probably within this year.
So, now I'm also planning to go for other options like FIAT Punto or TATA Vista.

Think again. The car is very good. I shall write an ownership review some time soon. Feel that you should wait. Things may happen soon as the capacity is higher now. Strike cannot go on indefinitely.

We sat with the dispatch manager at Sagar and to our shock, his excel sheet showed my friend as priority number 5 now! Which means 3 others have bribed their way into the priority list in the past month. When we confronted him, he initially refused to admit any golmaal. My friend, a short tempered guy, was in no mood to take this nonsense.

The booking sequence is not transparent at all. They did not give me an allotment or priority number. I am happy that I was given an early delivery. So no complaints here.

The sales rep said it was 12 months waiting for ZDi BEFORE the strike restarted. Now the waiting period is, lo and behold, 14 months! I think even Ferrari and Lamborghini customers won't have to wait this long, so Swift must be truly special to command such a long wait
Check with another dealer after the strikes are over. This could not be correct from my experiences and the newly installed capacities. By that time, Suzuki might have completed the blue print of 2016 swift. So better book after 2 years and get 2016 swift instead.

Positron, please call up the regional sales office & report what the dealer is up to ! Trust me, the regional office can in fact make a difference to the output. Am speaking from my own experience, dealers play the fool most of the times.

Re: People who booked Swift , "A harrased lot ".

MSIL dealers aren't giving any Booking Code or number detail at the time of booking. They've just given me Simple looking Dealer's Paper Receipt(of the money paid) only.

At ours place, RITZ D's scene is very different.
Its readily available at the MSIL Dealer & is offered with Rs.17500 discounts also.
While on RITZ Petrol, discounts are even more i.e upto Rs.20-25k.

At ours place(Ludhiana, Punjab) New Swift ZDi costs Rs.6.48 lacs(Ex-Showroom, Price). Add up another Logistics, RTO charges, Insurance charges, etc then its OTR prices becomes Rs.7.10 lacs, as quoted by Local Maruti Dealer.

IMHO, He's referring to the i20's similarly priced 'Sportz' version, which is priced 25-30k more than New Swift ZDi which is loaded with Twin Airbags & ABS-EBD with Brake Assist, whereas i20 Sportz comes with Driver's Airbag only. ABS & Passenger Airbag is missing in it & is available in its Top-end i20 Asta version only which is priced alot higher at Rs.7.20 lacs only.

I think the regional sales office would be able to give you correct information. You can also enquire about the tentative delivery date as per your booking ID which can be taken from your dealer.

Re: People who booked Swift , "A harrased lot ".

The new swift is a good vehicle, but getting ones hands on it seems to be a major problem.

The labour issues in the plant are not good news for wait periods and for quality.

In answer to ther first question on options to the swift - Vista, - Sister Ritz - but then unhappy with suzuki and going back to it? Drivers car - Punto.

Saw a new Swift old model today, sold by Popular Vehicles only couple of days back. Are these available with dealers even now?

6.5L must be ex-showroom price? Can it be so cheap up north - 6.5L OTR? Its 7L OTR Trivandrum.

i20 (diesel) comes ONLY with dual airbags. 6 Airbags is only as an option on the 1.2L petrol variant. Also, Asta is the only variant that offers ABS, and it costs 8.2L OTR in chennai - almost 75k more than Swift ZDi.

He would have been referring to the Sportz variant which costs 20k+ than Swift ZDi - and offers only driver side airbags (No ABS).

Most of Swift buyers buy the car as it is a "Maruti" & not because of it's driver oriented nature ! Those majority will be equally comfortable in a Punto or i20 or Figo and would have bought the car if it was marketed, sold & serviced by Maruti.
Qouting from the official review -

The wide appeal of this car is mind boggling. You as an enthusiast like it, your conservative father likes it, the fashionable aunt likes it, the college going student likes it, and the well-to-do semi urban / rural customer likes it too. The Swift is a rare mass market car that is also fun to drive, a hatchback that appeals to the gearhead as well as the common Anand.

It truly has a wide appeal -

1. I like it because its real fun to drive, spacious enough, with enough features. Good FE is a big plus too. Handling is a big priority for me because I was using a WagonR for the past 5 years and i really need the change.
2. My father likes it because its a Maruti and hence no reliability, after-sales issues and no need to bother much about resale value either. Moreover, the diesel has been returning excellent mileage figures in the previous version. For his driving - he loved the light clutch and small turning radius too. When it was launched in 2005- he used to hate the look. But now, after seeing so many cars on the road - he likes it too.
3. My girlfriend likes it because its good looking & has a youthful image. (Somehow - she didnt like Punto but loved the Linea).

Leaving my mom out of this because she likes it because her son likes it. Moms are moms!

GTO,
Superb review, infact these days looking at the quality of reviews being done by Team BHP, planning to cancel my subscription to Auto Bild. However am keen to understand these 2 points which you have made, are there any modifications being done for the increased mileage that has been quoted.
Also regarding the brakes, would you attribute to the increased vehicle dynamics and size for their poor performance?

re: Maruti Swift : Test Drive & Review

Finally saw the new Swift on the road: there is a white one parked in my apartment complex.

It looks so similar to the old Swift that I almost didn't realise it was a new one till I spotted the red plates of the temp registration. Then noticed the changed reg plate location, the smaller rear window and the ORVM-mounted turn indicators, which seem to be the only visual differentiators from the old car.

Interiors look fab: I had a quick peek through the tinted windows and it is a definite improvement over the current gen. But for the life of me can't figure out why MSIL chose to make the car so similar-looking to the outgoing model.

With keeping the trust on Maruti Suzuki for the improvement on this Braking for the New Swift, I've also booked New Swift ZDi in July but that belief also evaporated after driving the New Swift ZDi Test Drive car.
I've also noticed that its Braking also lacked the Bite that's present in its rivals like Punto, Vista, Micra, etc.
Though I braked it strongly at the speed of 100kmph & it responded too but not enough to inspire the Confidence, totally unexpected from that much loaded car costing Rs.7.2 lacs OTR.
Even Ritz is having better brakes than both New & Old Swift.

Yes.
In its VDi/VXi version it shows Instantaneous, Average fuel consumption alongwith Trip, Odometer & Digital Clock.

While ZDi/ZXi displays Outside temprature also alongwith above VDi/VXi based info.

The ZDi which is Test Drove few days back showed 8.6kmpl only on its FE display meter.

. I am not exaggerating but the brakes of our 13yr old M800 felt more sure footed than the Swift.

The Swift which i test drove showed had a faulty ACC display, the temp was showing 61C and the MID showed 14.3KMPL. When I asked the sales representative,he said the car was giving about 20KMPL in city but the MID was erroneous and the ACC display was also malfunctioning. This was in a 1400kms old car. It might be a similar case in your TD car.( BTW I was flooring the car like petrol whenever the road was clear but MID was constant at 14.3 throughout, even when the car was idle.)

True, The brakes felt exactly like how i felt when the brakes in my swift D needed a bleed. There was no bite at slow speeds and at high speeds it felt like in high speed situations I ll just go into whatever you have been trying to avoid. Totally Surprised at the fact that my car without an ABS and just an upgraded brake booster has way better brakes than the new Swift and mine does not even have an ABS. I guess there was no learning lesson for Maruti

Same pinch..
I was also making sort of Similar comparison.
No offense meant to Swift owners but IMHO, Brakes of Alto @100kmph fell much better appointed than Swift LDi/VDi @100kmph.

Haha..
The same happened with me too, when I Test Drive the New Swift ZDi(barely 2500kms driven) a week ago, I got to see the same thing -Its ACC system hanged immediately after its starting & it stuck to the Full blower speed at LO-mode. Then I controlled its blower speed manually after much efforts.
But the MID system as you've quoted might be in its right state of tune as it must be set on the Average Fuel consumption mode(which varies with trip settings only).

Simply put: To play safe.

Why tamper with an ultra successful formula?

12k units selling per month after being a 6 year old product.

Thus the exterior design is an evolution not a revolution!

Driven : The 2011 Maruti Swift Diesel Zdi
********************************

A car that cements it's position as the best driver's car in the segment. However less than impressive braking and a design that just doesn't have the charm of the original disappoints.

That in short is my summary of the short drive I had of the new Swift diesel. The details follow:

Engine
*****
You crank the oil mill and you will be forgiven for mistaking it for a petrol at idle. It's actually quiet. On the move the power is smoother and less peaky making for a very easy drive. Though, very rarely you find yourself missing the old surge. But the new engine is not slouch - good midrange.

Gearshift
*******
Smooth, light - just the right weight on it. The quality in the shift is noticeable for it's improvement

Steering
*******
The extra amps of the steering motor seemed to have helped.

Ride and Handling
*************
This is the one area in which the Swift has just blown away it's old rep of being a bumpy ride. It's very comfortable and sure on bumpy B roads. The silence in the suspension is just a long way from the thumps the old version used to emit on similar roads. And this while retaining the old handling charm.

Braking
******
The Swift continues to disappoint in this aspect. ABS and 185 spec 15 inch rubber did not seem to add any bite to the braking. It felt mediocre at the most.

Would I buy the Swift this time as a current Swift owner. Sadly no. The 2008 version still is the best compromise for me. I don't like the new looks nor do I the fact that the braking ain't up to spec. Also the lack of boot space seriously limits the practicality of the car. So it goes down a couple of notches as a daily driver for me at that price point.

Drive on,
Shibu.
