Does top end mean AT? He didn't clarify that at the price anouncement

The prices are very close to the Cruze in the diesel segment. All prices ex-Delhi.

LT MT - 13.85L
LTZ MT - 14.77L
LTZ A/T - 15.67L

Elantra
Diesel Base - 12.91L
Diesel S - 13.64L
Diesel SX - 14.85L
Diesel SX A/T - 15.85L (the price of A/T was not announced, but just displayed on the screen)

Petrol S - 12.51L (no 'Base' variant in Petrol)
Petrol SX - 13.74L
Petrol SX A/T - 14.74L (if my eyes read the distant numbers on the screen correctly). Again, this was not announced but just displayed.

No. Elantra is available in 3 trims: Base, S and SX. The top end here refers to the SX trim. AT prices will be higher.

No, diesel A/T is priced at 15.85L, where as Cruze A/T is at 15.67L.

Priced perfectly.
It would give many of cars Run For Their Money (present in its segment).
Definitely going to be the Segment Leader.
Though it would hamper the sales of Verna SX(O) largely.:D So, expect offers on the same.

So the Motobash guys were pretty close to the onRoad prices. Bangalore on road prices for the AT would be close to 20L. That looks overpriced for a 1.6L diesel.

I would rather pay a little more and buy the Jetta.

Top end of Elantra is close to 45-50% more than the top end Verna. This is way too much than i expected. I am a bit dissappointed :deadhorse

19.8L for Jetta A/T (ex showroom Delhi) and 15.8 for Elantra A/T
I would not say that you are paying "Little more" for Jetta A/T?

Its a jump of 20%+!

we are talking about a difference of 3.3Ls between both cars - that's ~16% difference. Surely, If I am putting that kind of money, I might as well put a 16 % extra to get a car which is immensely more capable. Just my point of view.

Not sure.. With OTR prices touching 20L in some cities, Hyundai seem to have taken an aggressive big bet here. But its good from the brand value perspective. Santa Fe is moderately successful - that might be tempting them to take a bet.

PS: Elantra GT was available at 8 lakhs OTR in Bangalore in 2003/2004. Its double today :)

Okay, I thought Jetta is close to 20L ex showroom Delhi
I guess
Jetta A/T = 18L ex showroom Delhi
Elantra A/T = 15.85L ex showroom Delhi

With a 2.15L difference in ex showroom price, I guess if you are hungry for power, the Jetta does make more sense.

I was hoping Hyundai will price it at 15L ex showroom for top end A/T model, but they priced it a little bit higher.

Must say that I'm pleasantly surprised with the pricing. Positioning it against the Cruze, and under-cutting the likes of the Jetta, is a very wise move. This segment loves the AT Diesels. The Elantra top-end diesel AT under-cuts the Laura & Jetta by a whopping 3 lakhs!

The Elantra petrol is the cheapest option in the segment too, whether manual or automatic.

When it comes to diesel MT, only the Altis 1.4L starts at a lower price, but that's the variant Toyota is targeting cabs with (it's way too basic).

Hyundai has learned its lesson in the D1 segment. If you don't have the badge value that this customer wants, attract them with a great price (just as Chevy did) & long list of features. The car is also a lot more sorted than the original Elantra was for its time.

Does this kind of a price advantage count? Of course it does. Else the Altis and Cruze wouldn't have been the segment leaders they are.

Rs. 12.51 lakhs - Base 1.8 litre petrol
Rs. 13.74 lakhs - SX 1.8 litre petrol

Rs. 12.91 lakhs - Base 1.6 litre diesel
Rs 14.85 lakhs - SX 1.6 litre diesel/ Rs 15.85 lakhs for A/T


May not be as dynamically sound as a Jetta/Laura but at this price point, being loaded to the gills like all hyundai models, should be interesting to see how it fares.

The petrol models no longer have the civic to worry about either. And it leaves the Cruze lacking in bells and whistles.
