Re: 2012 Volkswagen Passat Highline - The beast finally comes home! EDIT: Now sold!

Hello,

I have made up mind to get my Passat serviced 2500 kms prior to its actual service interval. As of now, I am planning to buy Castrol 6114772 Edge Ti 5W-40 Car Engine Oil on amazon. I have decide to use this oil as VW is using the same oil in their showrooms, the only difference is they are using "edge professional". Can someone please help me find a very good oil filter, air filter, diesel filter and ac cabin filter online.

I am particular about buying these online as I am not very confident about the spare part shops here in Hyderabad. I am looking for products of higher quality and do not mind paying a slightly higher price. Since I am getting the job done at a local garage I will be saving some money anyway. The car has now clocked 42,000 kms. Thank you

I would suggest you to get the car serviced at Authorized Workshop since its a normal service. VW charges aren't really that high. Plus you will save on hassle of sourcing parts and trusting whether they are genuine or not.

PPS Motors in Hyderabad is good. Got my Vento TDi serviced from there last month.

Re: 2012 Volkswagen Passat Highline - The beast finally comes home! EDIT: Now sold!

Hello BHPians!

Car: 2012 Volkswagen B7 Passat 2.0 TDI Highline Bluemotion

TLDR: Low fuel pressure error code P0087, car won't start. Dealer quotes ₹350,000 just to change entire ECU kit and figure out what's wrong. Should I spend and keep, or repair and flip?

I drive a 2012 B7 Passat 2.0 TDI DSG Highline completed about 115,000km. I would like your opinion regarding (yet another) problem with the car.
So in late August, I had gone for a small drive and came back home. I switched off the car to open the gate and suddenly the car won't turn on. Got a message saying, "Low Fuel Pressure". Managed to push the car inside the driveway.
I have had horrible experience with VW Trichy and I always spend and send the car to VW Madurai (~130km from home). Being lockdown season we just wanted to get it running enough to be sent to Madurai. We sent it to a competent but small-time local garage.
The guy tried everything in his power to get the car running. He changed the common rail, nozzles, main fuel pump, and one condenser to get the ECU running. The car started but would switch off unless revved. He was collaborating with a service friend in a VW service centre.
He then hit a dead end. He wasn't able to do further so he requested us to send to the company for a better diagnostic report, to VW Trichy. We obliged and sent it to VW Trichy early November. He said, "we aren't able to get another ECU anywhere in the country. So we will have to change the ECU to check what's wrong. It would cost ₹350,000, and based on that we would take action. We would change the entire ECU Kit - ECM, cluster, and keyring setting". (Not sure but I think this is what he means - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vw-Passat...-/153595562182)
So I took to Instagram and found a parts supplier from New Delhi. He was super polite and said he would try repairing the ECU. A new ECU would cost ₹160,000.
I also found a good garage in Chennai (https://www.instagram.com/engineers.autogarage/) who said he would give it a shot at repairing it. He has the parts network and can source parts. But the car cannot be towed on a rope, it needs to be sent through a flat bed.

So I am in a dilemma and need your expertise:
1. Should I service it in the company or the garage?
2. I have decided that I would sell the car (Just done with VAG, this is my 4th and last VAG). The question is when. I have just changed the flywheel (DSG DQ 250 woes :P) earlier in the year and if I spend this amount I would a new ECU. The engine works fine and the timing chain had also been changed a while ago. Should I enjoy the car for a while to reap the benefits of getting my fingers burnt, or sell it at the earliest to prevent more mishaps? It's a 4th owner car (accounting reasons)

Thanks a ton!

Speak to VW Madurai Workshop head, explain your problem. Ask him to send a flat bed and get them to evaluate the problem.

If the evaluation is same, which I hope wont; sell the car and make good with whatever resale you receive.

The FNG you sent the car to, has restored to all original parts whatever he changed? If not, do inform VW Madurai about it as well.

Passat is a good car and engine has a lot of life in it.

Hopefully the electrical gremlins are resolved by competent VW Workshop.

TLDR: Vehicle towed to independent specialist in Coimbatore. In VW Trichy, engine immobiliser was activated and car was locked before it could be taken to Coimbatore.

Updates regarding the Passat:
1 Yes, the parts the local mechanic had changed were OEM. The main pump was new while the common rail was used. The fuel delivery system was removed from the vehicle and tested independently and were found to be working. But it was beyond his capabilities.
2 VW Madurai was a dead end. In typical VW fashion, for a car beyond 5 years the sales team becomes the service advisors

VW Trichy charged ₹3,850 for their inspection of the car. They said they didn't have an ECU to swap to check, and also had shipped a common rail from their Coimbatore store.

A friend of mine in motorsports recommended an independent specialist Coimbatore. Confirmed with a local relative. Called up the manager who sounded pretty confident he'd fix the car.
Had to car towed to the workshop for ~₹13,000.

When I went to get the car on the flatbed, the immobiliser was activated. The electronic parking brake didn't work so the service personnel removed the wheels and manually disengaged the handbrake. When I asked them what was the problem, they replied that because the ECU didn't have power so the parking brake couldn't be engaged.

It was a rude shock when the car had reached Coimbatore. Both the garage manager and the mechanic here say there was no reason for the immobiliser to kick in. The front power windows weren't working. The plastic part below the left wiper had been broken to allow access into the ECU. Sounds scary :/

But it's beyond me how VW Trichy can bring a completely make a lemon out of otherwise a good car. The car was driven into VW Trichy and the car left their premises without even being able to engage the handbrake!

Just goes to show how important having a competent workshop is for these German cars.

Had a breakdown in Ahmednagar in our Vento TDI in 2015 and VW Workshop over there didn't knew what was wrong and how to repair it.

Got car on flatbed to Navi Mumbai and VW Autobahn, Turbhe resolved it for Rs. 3800. Solenoid valve pressure convertor had gone bad. Had to spend 10,000 to have car flatbed. Till date no issues.

I hope your car gets fixed soon.

Do keep updated on the happenings as it unfolds.

Re: 2012 Volkswagen Passat Highline - The beast finally comes home! EDIT: Now sold!

Hello BHPians

My car has clocked 70,000 kms and it’s time for me to replace the tyres. It has Pirelli 215/55/r16. They have lasted 40,000 kms. Had 3-4 punctures in the last 30 months and no side wall damage.

I spoke to a few tyre dealers in Hyderabad and one of them suggested to go for 215/60R16

Need your valuable suggestions. I drive the car in a relaxed mode most of the time and I really like a light/effortless steering. Increasing the ground clearance by an inch would help to avoid scratching the mud flaps on speed breakers. At the same time I don’t want the speedometer to show me inaccurate readings due to the change in the tyre.

Please share your thoughts on a suitable tyre change.

Wow! It feels awful reading about the trouble you're facing with your car. Sad to see some of the dealers not stepping up to actively help you out. Have they managed to solve your problem yet?

I had shared my experience of getting the tyres changed on my Passat, on page 15 of this thread. Do check it out and see if it is helpful.

I changed from the stock Pirelli 215/55/R16 to Yokohama 225/55/R16. Loved the beefier stance the new tyres gave my car. Never really faced any issues with the Yokohamas.

I too changed to Yokohama Blue Earth 225/55/R16 and am very happy with them. They are significantly better than the Pirelli's in all aspects - grip (dry & wet), road noise & comfort
