re: Review: Skoda Octavia (3rd-gen)

I’m having this warning pop quite often which disappears by itself almost immediately. This I have been experiencing since two years. I reported it while service but there was no indication of any issue by them. Al though I could not take screen shot of the exact error all these while.

Recently on long journey after many months, I could see this error stay for a while for me to take a picture. But again this disappears quickly and no issue what so ever. Any clue what this error means?

It is a sensor in the shifter assembly that's either gone bad or has dirt accumulation due to which it gives wrong signals about the gear being in 'P' mode when it is not and vice versa. The only solution is changing the whole assembly I believe. Typical problem affecting many VAG cars that share this part.

Very correct! I'd strongly suggest a visit to the workshop and check if there are any technical bulletins etc. and how much the sensor assembly is.

Refer these threads:

You don't want it appearing when you're outstation somewhere with family et all.

we had the same issue in our car since it was around a year old. Every service i was told that is was checked a nothing to worry. Frequency of this kept increasing over the years.
finally just before the warranty expired, they replaced the shifter cable assembly which costs 70-80k.

Its been a year and half since the replacement and that error has not popped up again.

If your car is still under warranty, push for a replacement. Otherwise i think is should not cause any major issues other than that annoying error pop up once in a while.

I think its decently priced. For peace of mind see if you can get extended warranty upto 6th year.

I guess if this was Delhi, I'd have considered it slightly high. Also important if this is L&K? if not, then I think its high.

These cars are not supposed to depreciate similar to Toyota, so I'd pick a second hand only if a real bargain (just my personal thought!).

What is the year of manufacture? Service package availabile? Extended warranty? Do you have any alternatives. Try if there is an onyx variant on sale. Since it was sold cheap from showroom you'll get it cheaper. If you are not very particular about octavia you can bargain hard for a brand new civic diesel in this budget.

I was actually hoping to quote 18L though being listed by the dealer and in Bangalore, I am not sure he will come down that low.

Yes, this is Octavia 1.8 TSI L&K.

I barely drove this year and the chances are I won't be driving much till June 2021 too so having second thoughts if I should go ahead as there are too many horror stories about how things break down in Octavia. I am driving Verna and in the last 5 years, it hasn't given me any problem. I am hoping for a similar experience with my new purchase too.

Manufacture year is 2018. I am not aware of other packages.

I will check with the Dealer about Onyx though personally, I will always prefer to go with top-end model only. I am OK with pre-owned cars as I don't drive much and don't want to take a huge depreciation hit.

Between the two, I will prefer to have Octavia only, I think it is a level above Civic.

I am exploring 2017 BMW 320i too but the price difference is so much that I don't think it can be compared with this deal.

BMW 320i
Manufactured - Nov 2017
Odo - 13k (looks suspicious but possible due to Covid19)
Colour - Black
Expecting - 30L

What do you think is a good price for it? I am thinking of quoting 24L as I can't extend budget beyond that.

The cost of getting extended warranty now will be more as skoda has restructured their plans. This can be accounted in negotiations if warranty is not available with car.

...
I don't think you'll get much resale value as a second owner. Over time, the resale value will be much lower as the car goes out or is about to go out of warranty. Best of Octavia can be had in warranty period. Not sure if L&K features will justify higher pricing in older octavias particularly when the features like auto park are rarely used. I found the features on style to be good enough while buying. If you are getting a good deal on style and don't mind missing some features you can consider it. As the car ages the gap in pricing of L&K and style should not be that much.

Eventually all skodas sell at scrap prices

I have a query regarding wheel alignment for Octavia. When the facelifted Octavia was launched in 2017, the rear track width has been increased by 20 mm for the 2.0 TDI and by 30 mm for the 1.8 TSI model. Hence I suppose from 2017 there may be some changes accordingly in the specified angles for wheel alignment for these two different models. Can that be so? And when I am opting for wheel alignment at an outside centre, will they be having these likely changes accounted in the settings with them as well? I hope someone can help me with this.

After having a setback with the earlier wheel alignment carried out at authorized service centre, I just want to have better understanding regarding this before going for another attempt.

Thanks and regards
Sumesh

Good point! Best thing is to call/visit a couple a reputed tyre shops at a off-peak time and ask them to look at their wheel alignment machines. These databases contain specs per model year, and if there is a change it will surely be captured when the manufacturer updates any tyre-related specs.

re: Review: Skoda Octavia (3rd-gen)

In my recent highway drive I started noticing this weird humming coming from tyres or somewhere else. It was very prominent at low speed and at high speeds, as the tyre rotation speed increases, it increase in frequency and hence not much noticed.

I showed it to a tyre dealer and the technician diagnosed it as step type wear of front tyres. As shown in attached pic, the wear is at multiple.places as patches and hence the humming. This is only there at the inside of front tyres.

However, the tyre technician says that it may not be an alignment issue and did not even push for for an alignment. He thinks that it could a suspension issue.
As of now, I have rotated the tyres and the humming has reduced a lot as the damaged tyres are at the rear now.

Has anyone faced this issue? Please advise if It could be a suspension issue and if I should urgently take the car to the service center.

Thank you for the suggestion. I would definitely be trying the same to ensure that proper specifications are followed before going for the alignment job.

You didn’t mention the mileage & year of your car, but something in your front end is worn & needs attention. Do not change your tyres before fixing the underlying problem or else the new tyres with suffer from the scalloping/cupping just like the previous set.
