Engine + Gearbox:
Same 1.3L DDiS that does duty in half the nation’s cars being widely accepted and praised. I felt at home driving it since I knew how the engine would behave at what gear. Enough has been spoken off and I don’t want to elaborate much on it. But the part I love of the engine is the VGT that is an advantage over the FGT on the Swift I own. The VGT addition makes the car feel ‘ready’ from the GO and is stress-free even at 120 kmph but I feel the Swift to be a bit strained after 120 kmph. One can keep cruising for days together without any issues.
The gearbox feels slightly notchy and doesn’t get into gear properly but this was sorted out after the first service. Now it feels good to drive.

Looks:
On a first glance, it looks like a grown-up, elongated Ritz. Reason I am saying this is due to the short bonnet and longer body with a tall stance reminds me of the Ritz whenever I look at it. Front end is well designed and has cues borrowed more from the Ritz but the rear where things don’t match well thanks to those Alto-ish tail lamps that are too small for that body design. A larger tail lamp would have done the trick and given the car a complete look. Alloys too feel nice to look at and suit the car when seen from all angles but I say it is a pain to clean them properly.
A very neutral looking car!

Ride and handling:
Comfortable, stable and knows what it is designed for. Minimal body roll even after being a tall boy it holds the line on the road without any glitch. The rear seats are the best place to be in with best ride quality being offered. It feels like a Rolls-Royce!

Space:
Almost as big as the Innova, the Ertiga has a wheelbase similar to the Innova (class leader) being 15 mm shorter so it is down to the brilliant packaging done by Maruti to please all the type of owners that decide to buy this car. If a youngster is looking at this, front seats are endowed with a good view to the driver. If chauffeur driven then the passenger seat offers good space if moved all the way behind and if the owner decides to sit in the back seat then the recline-able seats make travel easy with ample space. Since the car will be used by dad (chauffeur driven) the third row is folded permanently making it for L.A.R.G.E boot to use.

Interiors & Ergonomics:
Another Swift when looked at the dashboard minus the all-black theme and the ACC set-up. The beige makes the cabin feel bright and spacious which is a big positive but highly painful to keep it clean. The only happy part is that the instrumentation console is black. Thank god Maruti left that black else if that was also was beige then I don’t know how it would look. Thank you Maruti!
Seating is what I love in this car which is tall and supportive to the whole body. One can do long highway trips without any breaks. Be it the height adjustable front seats (Driver) or the reclining rear ones that makes moving around lot easier. All controls fall in place with best ergonomic that make the driver or passenger feel at home. Ingress and Egress is the best in the Maruti stable with no need to bend/crouch. The best part is the rear door, opens almost half the length of the car making it easy to walk-in. The seat and b-pillar distance is good enough so that it doesn't obstruct when getting in or out.

Features:
The ZDi variant has everything that a car need but surprising part is the omission of the ACC in the top-variant. The old-school A/C looks out of place giving a feeling like it is a VDi trim. The beige in the interiors is OK but Maruti should have applied some common-sense to give a darker shade where human contact happens frequently so that it doesn’t get dull or soiled spoiling the whole look of the car.
The second row A/C controls are a nice feature that increases comfort levels without the need to irritate the drive to control the A/C depending the rear passenger’s feedback. One thing that I have noticed is that when the front AC switches are in OFF position and the rear A/C controls are used, cool air blows. Is this that the rear A/C controls chill the passengers irrespective of the front A/C usage? I know that there is a condenser pipe inside the rear vents but I thought that the rear AC cooling is routed through the front so if one doesn’t use the front AC then the rear ones just blow air. What say guys?!

Tyres
Maruti loves MRF, this is the company that they have tied up with and the ZVTV does duty here with a specification of 185/65 R15. This is the same that is on the Swift too. Cost saving I must say. This car needs better section tyres.
Grip levels are good with only grouse being tyre noise being on the louder side. It is more audible that the diesel engine at highway speeds. Dad being happy and ok with it no upgrade is planned as of now. The issue here is that the spare wheel is not in the boot but is placed underneath the third row which needs to be lowered down to use. Till date no punctures have happened for dad to try this circus out.

Fuel Efficiency:
Being a small engine (on capacity point of view) has a decent FE for its size. Being 90 PS on power it is giving us 16.7 kmpl overall till date with 4K on the odometer. The average FE is not crossing 16 kmpl at all and I hope this better’s out after the oil change. Surprising but I am happy and not that I am expecting this car to return 20 kmpl. Fuel bills are on check and dad’s purse too! I guess it is that VGT that is spoiling the FE which makes him use the power band more and more. Addiction you see with NO regrets here.

Audio
Nice looking HU (but for the beige again) with the speakers placed on all 4 doors each and the tweeter on the front end of the dashboard. The buttons on the Head unit feel
rough but have a positive response. Made by Nippon Audiotronix the sound quality is on the lower side thanks to those large interiors that is not efficiently covered by the speakers. The speakers crack if the volume is increased so the normal hearing range is 7 to 11. I would prefer a sub-woofer and an amplifier for the Ertiga to get good sound out of the set-up. Steering mounted controls are another boon since the driver needs not lift his hand off the wheel and can concentrate on driving rather than shuffling songs.
The annoying part I have found is that the folder changing knob is ONLY to change folders but if a folder has 250 songs and I want to listen to the 191st song, I have to press the ‘Next’ button 191 times which is pretty annoying to me (Same issue in my Swift).

Build Quality
It is made and built on par with competition with no ratting till date from any corner of the car. I find panels gaps to be large in some placed like – front door and the front quarter panel gap (Near the DDiS logo).
