The story of my first new car finally coming home started around 8 months back. You wouldn’t believe what my first choice was, considering what I finally ended up buying !

I was hell bent on buying the Thar I test drove the vehicle, and fell absolutely in love with it, in fact, I still am! Am sure you all know why I didn’t go down that road – happens to most Jeep aspirants in India. The elders of the family are harping about practicality and the wife, even though loves the looks of the Jeep, never really got on board with the Idea especially after she got tossed around in the rear seats when me and my buddy TD’d the Thar. In addition, my wife doesn’t drive, and she refuses to drive my older car - Chevy Optra, which she calls ‘ the boat’ as its difficult for her to maneuver. So the wife a.k.a HQ, vetoed the Thar dream and decided that we need a hatch. So my year long research on the Thar was shut down, only to be hopefully opened up in the near future when I can afford another car !
Thus started the search for the hatch. This car would be the primary car as I would sell the Optra, she is old and weary and I cannot deal with her maintenance costs anymore ! I knew that I wanted a premium hatch as technically, I was downgrading – Optra being a sedan, and so I decided on the following:

a) Suzuki Swift Zxi
b) 2013 Polo 1.2 Highline
c) Hyundai i20.

One Saturday we decided to head to the showroom and TD the swift and the Polo. First was the polo. Not impressed at all – mainly due to the engine noise and the lack of a punch in acceleration. I also got to TD the GT – now that’s what I call a mean machine! Alas, way out of my budget. Next stop was the Suzuki Showroom. We got hold of the TD vehicle quickly and took it out for a 15 minute drive. I was quite impressed with the top model variant – nice interiors, peppy engine and excellent road handling. Loved the car immediately. After reading a whole bunch of reviews on the i20 the next day, I decided against it – the general consensus seemed to be – an overpriced car, with a sluggish engine. So now it came down to the Swift and the Polo. The Swift Zxi on road price was 6.15 Lacs and the Polo was 6.86 Lacs. No discounts of any sort on the Swift. However the Polo had two interesting offers:

Offer 1: Rs. 25,000 Cash discount

Offer 2:
• No cash discount.
• 1 Yr extended Warranty
• 1 Yr Extended RSA
• Free Insurance for 3 years ( Pay little extra for Zero Dep)
• Pay 500 Rs. Per month and avail free servicing at the end of the year, labor included.

Since budget was important coupled with the fact that Maruti has a better service network and cheaper spares, I decided the Swift was the car for us. This was followed by intense research on reviews , and the various mods I could do so that I could be happy in my little hatch. This went on for another 2 months. Somewhere during this period, I saw a brand new swift at a local workshop crushed like a ball of paper. On inquiring the mechanic told me it was in an accident and the car was a total write off. Thankfully the occupants were safe. This incident made me read up on the safety of our Marutis. And subsequently I started reading up on polo as well. Didn’t take me long to figure that the polo was a much sturdier vehicle. Solid body with side impact beams and a laser welded roof. Has been crash tested by international testing body’s and has an excellent rating on the outcome of these tests. Yes , my priority was budget, but safety is definitely on top of the list. The German counterpart does not compromise on quality, that’s for sure.
So I took an about turn and started reading up on the VW now. And this went on for another couple of months! Post this, I was convinced of the Polo. I preferred the looks of the polo to the swift from day 1 itself. My study on the vehicle confirmed that VW’s service network is weak as compared to Maruti. Spares are expensive too. And so is the yearly servicing. I started asking around, taking feedback from people who own polo’s and the general consensus was – great car, safest amongst all the competition, expensive to maintain, don’t bother going on long trips , you just might end up getting stranded. After all this, I was still leaning towards the Polo.

A few more weeks down the line we decided to go do another TD. I feel the TD vehicle this time was in better condition because this time, the pick and the lack of punch that I noticed the previous time, didn’t really bother me now. I felt it had enough power that I would need and I was quite happy with the TD . This was when rumors of the facelift Polo started surfacing. My SA told me that it would be launched in September. I wanted a few days to check on his claims, and found out that in most probability it would be launched in July. After a lot of self debate I decided I would wait it out for 4-5 weeks ( we were in May then) and see what July has to offer. I am glad I did that because by the second week of June, it was pretty much confirmed through a friend of mine who works at a leading car magazine that July 15th will be the official launch of the facelift Polo.

My plan now was twofold. I would pick up the new polo IF it is priced not too much over the old version. Plan B was – if I get a fantastic deal on the outgoing model, then I will go for it. By now I already knew of all the features that would be introduced into the new version. Then came the painful wait for the big launch. Felt like forever. Finally D day arrives. Post the launch, I called up my SA. He told me he could let me know indicative pricing the next day. On the 16th, he told me he could offer me the 2013 Polo 1.2 Highline at 6.35. The 2014 polo highline is priced at 6.83, no discounts since it is an introductory price and is likely to go up in a couple of months. After yet another few days of deliberation, I finally put down the down payment on the 20th for the 2014 Polo 1.2 Highline, as 50k difference was not worth opting for the outgoing model. I also test drove the new vehicle. More on that later.
The SA came home and collected the cash and promised me in writing to deliver the car within 5 days. My choice of color – Night Blue. Freebies promised – 2 VW key chains, Mud Flaps & Mats (which turned out to be the fabric one, I later bought the rubber OEM mats from the dealer itself).
The next week went in bank paperwork etc. My DD was ready on the 25th, and the dealer had shifted the car from the stockyard to the showroom on the 24th. On time, as promised. I told the dealer that I would require at least 90 minutes to carry out the PDI( courtesy Tbhp). So we fixed a time and I decided I will do the PDI at 1600 the same day. Being in the peak of summers, Gurgaon sees sunlight till 5.30 and it gets dark only post 7.30.

Delivery Experience:
We got to the showroom at 1600hrs and after a 15 minute wait, we were escorted by our SA to the back where the cars are lined up and that’s when I saw her first Gleaming in the sunlight. The night blue is an absolute stunner! Yes, I know the cons of having a dark metallic color but I think it will be worth it. I think I drooled a bit as well.

I brought my brother in law as well to back me up with the PDI. Over the next 60 minutes we inspected every inch of the car, leaving the undercarriage. Except for a few marks on the beige interiors (probably caused by somebody’s grimy hands), the car passed all the checks. Unfortunately, I forgot to tell them not to put any stickering and now I have a VW Gurgaon 0124- xxxxx at the back ! My SA tells me that the glass might get scratched as they will need to remove it with a blade. Does anyone know how I can get this off without any damaging the paint? Post the interior and exterior inspection, we requested to TD the car (as advised by the tbhp checklist). The SA told us we could not take it outside the compound, so we ended up driving it round and round the building around 7-8 times, much to the amusement of everybody around. The car seemed fine. Oh and funny thing – VW spare tire is a size smaller than the other 4! I thought it was a mistake but the SA told me that it applies to all VW vehicles because VW believes that a spare should be used just as the name suggests – sparingly! Ridiculous I feel. Also, no alloys on the spare – steel rims.

With the PDI now complete, I handed over the draft to the SA and he started off the final paperwork towards handing over the car. 30 minutes later, after all the formalities ( pictures etc) we were on our way back home. Filled her up enroute – full tank costed me just over 3k.
On the way home, I noticed water dripping from the rear viper water outlet. I turned a blind eye, but unfortunately it still happens, mostly when I first start the car. Must show it to the VW folks soon. Any idea why this is happening? Also , with four adults (2 men, 2 women) sitting in the car, I crept over a speedbreaker and heard a crack at the rear. On inspection, the right mud flap had nicked the breaker and has broken! That was quick!

Test Drive and overall feedback so far (I’ve managed to clock 300 kms in the past 6 days).

In my opinion the Polo is a real stunner. On the exterior, it is simple yet sophisticated. I love the sporty looks and the way the car looks and feels planted on the ground at all times. The paint job is top notch, i was told that each vehicle goes through a six stage painting process - don't know how far that is true. The interior of the Polo is even more impressive than the exterior. I am extremely happy with the quality of the plastics used and the overall finish. Definitely gives one the feeling of a truly premium car. A friend of mine who bought the outgoing Nissan sunny told me that the finishing in the polo is better than the sunny. That had me beaming from within! Moving from a sedan, i definitely felt cramped at the rear seat and so did my wife. However friends who own other hatchbacks were quite happy with the space. The front row spacing is perfect. I love the seat height adjustment feature as well as the telescopic steering feature. The air conditioning is powerful and climate control is yet another handy little feature. The AC does seem to be a little noisy to me above level 3. Cooling on a hot summer day in Delhi was quick. The throw of the headlamps are definitely better than the outgoing versions. My vehicle came with Good year tyres instead of Apollos.

The stock seat cover was beige - looks great but maintaining it would be challenging considering i have pets and hence i changed the covers immediately. The seat by itself offers great back support. Turn the ignition on and the three pot roars to life. Driveability in the city is a breeze. The polo feels super smooth and weaves in and out of traffic like a breeze. The engine still struggles in 1st & 2nd gear, but nothing a little high rev cant fix. As for highway driving, i took her for a spin to Surajkund. The polo was cruising on 100 and i didn't even realize. Pushed her to 120 and then eased out as i am supposed to be in the run-in period. Overtaking on the highway was pretty easy, of course it lacks the punch one craves for, but it isn't bad enough for me to complain about. The MID showed 16 on the highway and around 7 in the city. I know this is not accurate - i am also on the tank fill method and will update once i hit empty in a few days.Overall i feel the 1.2L , 3 cylinder engine has ample oomph to operate smooth both in the city and the highway.

One of my favorites in the car is the gear shift. Short, and super smooth, it slots into place effortlessly every single time. very sporty feel to it. the piano black on the gear shift looks fantastic too. Suspension i feel is a bit softer than the previous versions. went through quite a few deep pot holes at varying speeds, touch wood so far i haven't bottomed out.Both in the city as well as out on the highway, the polo handles beautifully. Cornering is a delight, the polo sits tight and hugs the ground giving the driver a sense of confidence even at higher speeds. Steering response is good both in the city as well as the highway on high speeds. Braking on the Polo is fantastic, thanks to the abs. The vehicle stops in a straight line every single time. i even had to break hard on some gravel and the car stood its ground without skidding. Boot space is great in the polo, one of the reasons i chose it over the swift. The car has been planned out well, has enough cubby holes for all your little knick knacks. The glove compartment has a sun glass holder as well as change slots, a nice little feature. I find the ingress and egress a bit of a problem. The polo sits low and tall people might struggle a bit. Overall, i think the Polo is a great machine. Great on looks, great on features. The only major negatives i can think of at this stage is the lack of a peppy engine, after sales service ( as pointed out many times in the past - people have had good and bad experiences) and the cost of spares.

Overall looks – Stands out from the crowd.

Love the new front grill with the chrome lining. Looks great against the color

Absolutely love the new sporty leather wrapped, flat bottomed steering with the piano black finish. Looks and feels awesome.

The Bluetooth telephony is an awesome feature. Once its paired, it auto detects whenever you enter the car.

Black and beige interiors look lovely. What stands out is the feeling of quality inside the cabin. The fit and finish and tiny details like chrome detailing, the leather-wrapped hand-brake lever simply smack of VW’s attention to detail which no other carmaker can match.

Footwell lights are a great add on. The cabin light and the foot well light light up the moment the key is out of the ignition and when you unlock the vehicle. Footwell lights are present in the passenger side as well.

Comfort levels are beyond words. I feel like i am sitting in a luxury tank. The car takes on all types of roads effortlessly

Seats give excellent back support. The cushioning is great and it literally hugs you. Hardly feel anything even in the worst road conditions.

Quick cooling AC. I am relieved that the AC works very efficiently. Delhi's heat is unbearable and in more than a couple of occasions, post the car being out in miserable heat, the cabin cooled within a minute.

Exceptional handling and brakes. Cornering is a breeze, there is hardly any body roll. Have 'tested' the abs feature on tar, gravel and mud - it works

I feel there are lesser vibrations than the previous model. I felt it both on start up and on idle.

Exact words from my sister who drives a Maruti A – Star – “ feels like I am floating” . This is in reference to the excellent drive dynamics. The car always feels planted on the road, and the suspension set up is best in class.

Climate Control is a nice little feature, although i wouldn't really miss it. Using it though would give better fuel efficiency as the compressor will be in use just enough to maintain the set temperature.

The ICE set up on the new vehicle is brilliant!!!! Much much better than the previous model . I don’t think I need to shift my amp & sub from the Optra. And mind you, this is coming from a guy who has spent a small fortune on the Optra’s ICE setup which sounds incredible. The Audio system now gets Bluetooth, USB and aux-in compatibility and memory card slots as well

Large boot space- Best in class and is more than enough to carry luggage of a family of four.

Improved MID - more information to play around with. Love the red lighting !!

Anti Pinch windows - Quite a neat feature. The windows will automatically retract if there is an obstruction. The rear windows however only open 3/4 of the way. I prefer is all the way down.

Better NVH Levels. Insulation inside the cabin is incredible. Typical of a German carmaker. You can test this byputting down the windows and honking the terrible horn !!

New headlamps offer better visibility than the previous model, I think – I might be wrong about this though. The dual lamp set ups looks great though.
 
Dislikes:

They have changed the horn. The previous one was much nicer. The new one is loud, but has a hollow tone to it - quite irritating for the person in front of you, so unless your intention is to annoy people around you, i don't think one would fancy the new horn as compared to the previous one.

The Dead pedal I feel hasn’t been planned/placed efficiently. It is lower than the clutch, so while lifting my foot off the pedal, it would either brush against it or get stuck. If you have bigger feet/ wider shoes, this could prove to be dangerous.

Three pot engine – let’s face it, who wouldn’t like a bit more power! Again, for my city driving i think its more than enough. The reason i am content could also be due to the fact that i have been driving a cng vehicle all this while.

Long clutch travel. One would notice this in the beginning, especially if you have owned a car before. I am up to 500 kms now and don't notice it anymore.

Small rear view mirror. Again, this doesn't bother me as i have installed a rear view camera. A larger ( wider/longer) mirror is clipped on to the original mirror. Visibility is much better now.

Beige colored floor mats – what was VW thinking?! I understand the matching with the beige black theme, but this is ridiculous. Especially in Gurgaon where my beloved girl will be floating very soon thanks to the horrendous water logging situation. That couple with mucky shoes all through the monsoons - maintenance is going to be a pain.

Rear leg room space is dismal. However better than my other two options. So far we are a family of two, so shouldn't really bother us majority of the time.

AC is noisy at medium levels. Crank her up to level 4 and above and it sounds like one of those gas stoves you find in tea shops.

Anticipated high Service and parts costs - In my native tongue there is a saying that translates to - don't give him a stick to beat you with. I know she's going to be expensive to maintain, but i hope its worth it.

No Light in Glove box - this is a basic requirement. Quite disappointed.

No Light in the boot - Again very basic, and i miss it. I usually dump all my groceries in the boot. Twice already i have found myself using my cell phone flashlight to look for things to offload.

I personally find ingress / egress a bit troublesome, i am a big guy and my foot keeps brushing the speaker area !

No Seat belt indicator. Another basic function that has been missed out.

Rear visibility is ( was ) terrible. The rear view camera sorts this little concern out beautifully. I have a fantastic 180 degree view now.

I like the roar of the engine. Again, I noticed its lesser compared to the outgoing model. My imagination maybe?

I have almost touched 500kms and she needs to be refilled. Currently getting an FE of 9.5kms/L . Hope this improves !!

Accessories fitted:
• Rear view camera with night vision – really helpful so far. Plus the bigger mirror has really improved rear visibility. However, during the day, once the reverse gear is slotted and the led comes to life, you will need to lower the mirror slightly as the glare from the light outside will totally flash out the video, something i can live with considering its a minor adjustment.
• Window visors
• Black and Beige Seat covers
• Tbhp Stickers ordered

Will update this thread as and when milestones are reached. Here are some pics.

Question – I’ve read under the running in thread, that the engine oil needs to be changed after clocking 1000kms. Now considering the fact that the SA told me the car does not need to be run in ( I ignored that and am still taking it easy) , is the oil change necessary ?

If i may ask one question, did you not consider the Grand i10 ? I guess Grand top end could have had with all the safety features and bells and whistles within your budget easily. It has peppy engine as well.

I did briefly consider the Grand i10, but vetoed that choice because looks were high on my priority list and the three mentioned options were the closest at what i had in mind, with the VW being the favorite.

Loved the color as soon as i laid my eyes on it during the first TD. It will be difficult to maintain, but am trying !

Heartiest congratulations Pavan , i had a TD of the Polo 1.5 TDi and VW has improved most of the shortcomings of this car. Brakes are better, NVH is better, ride is improved and that flat bottom steering lifts the ambience up by miles, compared to Swift, the interiors reek of quality, build quality is excellent and the ride quality is several notches higher (found the Swift too harsh on the ride).

What a lovely car too, maintain it well though, VW's paint quality is top notch, keep it that way(have a 2 year old Vento, the interiors and exteriors are the same as on day 1). With a VW, would advise you to choose a good service center as that helps the car remain trouble free and you headache free , hope you have opted for extended warranty.

Dang your car is a looker. I'm in love with the headlamps and the steering wheel on the new Polo, but an upgrade would cost me at least 50k, for which I will need permission from HQ (that is if it's technically feasible in the first place...)

Go ahead and get the sticker removed. I got mine removed recently at 3M when I'd gone for a detailing job, and the rear windshield looks so much better. The longer the sticker stays, the greater the "shadow" it will leave behind even after you remove it. Will post a pic tomorrow so you see what I mean.

The rear wiper wash malfunction sounds like something I'd looked at asap too. You don't want to wait till the six month checkup. Hope it's just a niggle.

The least they should do is take your permission before putting the stickers. We shouldn't have to tell them not to put them on.

Did you get the rubber mats from the dealer or aftermarket? Can you post some pictures of the ac buttons at night? Didn't know that they were not illuminated. Thanks.

Also, if anyone could suggest a good service center in Gurgaon/Ncr, would be great ! I was told by my SA that i can opt for the extended warranty in the 23rd month, so i think that's what ill do.

It will be expensive, however you could also check with Vagtune.in, they are oem suppliers for most luxury vehicles and you might get it cheaper. Good luck convincing the missus !

Thank you ! Diablo was an untammable italian bull that had taken the life of many a matador. My first vehicle which was a RE Bullet was aptly named Diablo. I just thought i will continue the tradition. She's a German Princess alright, but with an Italian Masculine name

Thank you !! Totally agree - Quite annoying, fortunately i caught him just before he was going to sticker other areas of the car as well.

I got the rubber mats from the Dealer for Rs.1800. Will post night pictures soon. I am surprised the buttons are not illuminated as well and hope its not another niggle.

You can opt for extended warranty in 23rd month as well but there is a catch to it, if the extended warranty costs 10k now during delivery, at the 23rd month, same will cost you 14-15k(that is VW's policy). If you want it, get it now, why pay 4-5k extra.

Oh shoot. Thanks for letting me know, ill definitely give them a ring and get this sorted. I wonder if its even an option right now, since i have taken delivery. Thanks for the info on the service centers as well. I think ill try the Gurgaon one first, traveling to Delhi is quite a pain. Of course if the service center here doesn't impress, ill opt for the Delhi one.

You can call them now, it'll be given to you at the same price. Even if you call them within 3 months it shouldn't be a problem. What happens is that the longer you wait, the more 'reasons' they have to charge you a premium, due to normal running of the vehicle, wear and tear, etc. Do it sooner rather than later.
