Re: Mercedes W124 E220 - The Deutsch Tank comes home

Over the weekend, got some long pending jobs done on the car , that have totally changed its character. Love the way she drives now.

List of Jobs done.

1)After a few months into the ownership i had discovered that the car was running on Non OEM exhaust, which was affecting performance. replaced it with a OEM MB exhaust from a donor car , and the car feels lively, and picks up speed much faster than before.

2)Front suspension Overhaul, each and every part was replaced.

3)New fan shroud, as existing one had cracks.

The work was done at CHD Moto Co, its a new set up barely 2 months old, and loved the way the whole job was handled. Full marks for technical competence and customer service.

Now some WIP pictures.

Re: Mercedes W124 E220 - The Deutsch Tank comes home

Long time no Update.
Last few weeks were pretty eventful
The car was not driven around much in July/August due to Monsoons, probably like not more than 70-80kms in 2 months.
3rd Party insurance was renewed in July, cost me 5800 bucks.

While parking it i made a small mistake not filling her up and she was left in the garage with just 10-15L of Petrol.
As the sun started shining i took her out;she started up fine, but as soon as she reached 1000-1200 RPM, it started jerking real bad, things were better post 1000-1200 RPM, but i could still feel that something was not right. The jerks were so bad, that it made me look like a fool on road. Did a DIY of Throttle body/MAF sensor cleaning to no avail.

On further investigation, found out that it was a clogged fuel filter.
Replaced the filter and cleaned the fuel pump, all is good for now.
Sometime down the line i plan to clean the tank/fuel lines as well.
Check out the fuel that came out of the filter.

Hi Akshay,

Absolutely amazing mate! The way the complete process has been done and still being done is just enthralling. The write-up sounds passionate and the pics are mesmerizing indeed.

Adjectives actually fall short when I reply on any of the W - xxx type mercs thread!

I dream of owning one and restoring it like you soon!!! Your inputs will be of great help as to where to start from!

Hey; after the NGT crap, i would suggest that you start off with looking for a Non NCR registered car,
and then decide whether you need a petrol or a diesel.

Rest we all are here to help. In fact, i got in touch with Viraat(Bhpian based out of delhi who has two of these 124's),even before i got the car, and that helped me a lot in sourcing the parts and all.

Re: Mercedes W124 E220 - The Deutsch Tank comes home

Long time no updates.
Well, the car has been parked mostly, since february 2016, with dad taking her out once a month, to keep things in Order. In spite of having a covered garage, thought of getting a body cover for the 124, thanks to our resident 124 expert Viraat, for helping me source one.

Feb 2016-Jan 2017, car remained parked with that occasional fortnightly run.
Distance covered between between Feb 2016-Jan 2017- 167Kms.

On my return, i found out that AC had stopped cooling. On inspection it was found that compressor's clutch had given up. Was an easy fix, and AC was back to its usual cooling. Nothing else to report, eventually the car went back to hibernation in third week of February 2017.

I am around with the car, as i type this, more updates soon

The guys whom I sourced the cover from, have stopped making for the 124 now.
However there are a few vendors who are making custom covers depending on your vehicle size.
I will try and find a contact and share it with you here.

Thank you so much! That would be of great help!
I got inspired by your post and bought a clean 1996 250D. I must say, it's a timeless masterpiece and doesn't even feel as a 23 year old car. I am lucky to find a rarely used one with original OEM paint. I'm on a lookout for few parts like the antenna rubber, roof light, car cover and light switch though.

Here are few pics:

Thanks

Yes! She's as good as a new born (cleanest 124 I've ever seen), It's an Indian made E250 D (1996). It's a time machine that takes you back to the golden era where cars where made with lot of attention to detail.

Only the headlamp wipers are imported

Re: Mercedes W124 E220 - The Deutsch Tank comes home

The Tank is still around, and has been doing duties of a Toy with full aplomb.
Crank her after months, and she fires up like a new car.

With my residency status changing from temporary to permanent in Australia, maintainance has been overlooked, even though, I have been travelling regularly.

Feb 2020; Got the yearly oil change done; Flew back to Australia before lockdown.

November 2020; Had to travel back home inspite of Covid being at its peak.
Dropped the car straight away at a friend's workshop for some front suspension work as couple tie rod boots were torn. She got some good company of old exotics at workshop

More updates as I log in some more Kilometers
