Any major problem with DCT overheating in slow off-roading?
If it's for hills, don't look at any option other than old school torque converter. Don't even think of DCTs. They tend to overheat in stop and go traffic even on level roads. Also, Koreans are giving dry clutch DCTs. That's even more risky. What brand you buy is your choice but but an old school TC, which I would say is even better than manual in hills. Seltos/Sonet/Creta diesel TC should be the car to go for, if you want a Korean.

Hi Karan, your earlier trip log showed an FE of 13.2 with 70% sports mode with 4 people and luggage.

This log shows 3 kmpl down on that. What would you say is the main reason - traffic blocks on state highway and city? Slower speeds on the SH should increase FE unless there is frequent need for stopping / idling / bumper to bumper traffic which affects the FE of turbo petrols - so would that be a reason?

Hi, Good question, will be a interesting case study for FE enthusiasts

The FE of 13.2 km/l achieved a few months back on a 200 odd km Holiday Roadtrip here;

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/test-...ml#post4875873 (Ownership Review: My Kia Seltos 1.4L Turbo Petrol (GTX+ DCT))

^ Was due to traveling with family (4 family members including an infant in the Seltos & 4 members in the Fortuner) & driving at a relaxed pace even in sports mode (Enjoying the Stiffened Steering more than the acceleration/power). The timing of this trip was during the early Unlock phases in 3rd week of August where travel restrictions were still in place & we need passes, hence a very free route.

Where as this trip log here;

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/test-...ml#post4955043 (Ownership Review: My Kia Seltos 1.4L Turbo Petrol (GTX+ DCT))

^ Showing FE to be 10.6 km/l on a 400 odd km morning - evening business trip was to my factory at Ranjangaon, Pune. The journey included around 4 hours of driving, overtaking traffic on 2 lane State Highway roads (Talegaon, Chakan & Shikrapur belt) which reduced FE drastically. Also as was driving solo wasn't really a relaxing cruise on the Expressway but more of a right toe workout.

Regarding your query raised in the above post, other than the last point about it being too common there's no other deal breaker.

Have been following your thread and it is re-assuring to know that you have had a trouble-free ownership experience with the DCT variant. I have booked the 1.4T DCT Plus variant and awaiting delivery sometime in 2022.

Could you throw some light on this software update for the clutch actuation distance that you are referring to? Is this a recent update that Kia is pushing to all DCT cars? I was under the impression that the DCT overheating issues were predominantly with the first batch of cars back in 2019 since I haven't seen any problems reported recently.

This update is not related to the DCT heating issues. By altering the actuation distance they have made the DCT more drivable (Read: Less Jerky) in Bumper to Bumper traffic conditions. IMO it's a good move/update.

Hi Karan,

If possible, could you please confirm the kerb weight of Seltos DCT as per RC?

Thanks!

Update: New Tyres (Upsized);

A very exciting update for this thread and an upgrade which I wanted to do since the time I bought the car is finally done;

^ These are Feb 2022 manufactured and were installed couple of months back (May 2022)

Installation was done at Super Tyres' New Workshop in Mulund West;

Here's a pic of the TPMS;

Ownership Review: My Kia Seltos 1.4L Turbo Petrol (GTX+ DCT)-img_5931.jpeg

The immediate difference is the looks & overall aggressive stance, here's a comparo with the OE 215's on the left;

Ownership Review: My Kia Seltos 1.4L Turbo Petrol (GTX+ DCT)-74841dcc1d404dc6b2e867d9848b954e.jpg

Kindly note this upsize has a Diameter Variance of only 0.07%.

Ride Quality;

This is where most of the improvements have been noticed. Michelins have truly transformed the ride of the Seltos. I correctly remember the ride of the OE Good Years (When New) and it was nowhere close to what these are when new, hence its definitely not a case of just new rubber v/s old. Overall the Michelin compound is soft (& should remain soft longer knowing Michelin). For Seltos owners who need more comfort and dont want to downsize the rims then this setup will surely satisfy you.

Highway Performance;

The Seltos was always a great handling car, thanks to the overall tuning of the suspension (being on the stiff side), chassis & also the drive modes which gave good steering feel when in Sport Mode. Now with this upsize & great rubber has unlocked that hidden potential of this Kia. I'd like to discuss the improvements as under;

Highway Driving on Concrete Roads (Like in this case Mum-Pune Expressway);

Ownership Review: My Kia Seltos 1.4L Turbo Petrol (GTX+ DCT)-img_5981.jpeg

Substantial improvements on this surface as the older Good Years were losing grip and a lot of careful acceleration was required because of the choppy nature of the earlier tyres. Michelins have not only inspired confidence but also helping in putting down the power much better on one of the least preferred road construction types for the enthusiasts.

Highway Driving on Tar roads;

Ownership Review: My Kia Seltos 1.4L Turbo Petrol (GTX+ DCT)-6d70265d748042b0bcb7e41f0a7d13cb.jpg

Excellent Performance on this road surface. The Braking performance has also enhanced. The car is most enjoyable now with the upgraded setup on this road type.

Driving on Mountain/Ghat Roads;

Ownership Review: My Kia Seltos 1.4L Turbo Petrol (GTX+ DCT)-img_6030.jpeg

More than the Rubber Quality the upsize has come into play to aid better handling performance & reduced understeer in the twisties.

Driving in the Wet;

Its the 1st Monsoon for the new tyres and so far its been a great feeling with this upsize. This Setup is also a psychologically boost on wet roads.

Ownership Review: My Kia Seltos 1.4L Turbo Petrol (GTX+ DCT)-img_7074.jpeg

Fuel Economy;

Ownership Review: My Kia Seltos 1.4L Turbo Petrol (GTX+ DCT)-img_6069.jpeg

To those concerned before it turns into a FAQ let me address that the FE is all related to the way you drive. Hence even though technically the Fuel Economy should reduce marginally but if driven well the Seltos 1.4 Turbo DCT can still be economical. Like in the above case I was able to get 19.4 km/l with controlled cruising at highway speeds on these upsized tyres.

Conclusive Thoughts;

This upgrade was done when the odometer reading was just under 23k kms. Even though the OE Good Years' had about 50% life left in them but I went ahead with this upsize as I could not resist waiting any further to explore the handling & ride benefits. My above thoughts are based on driving about 1500 kms on this new upsized setup;

Ownership Review: My Kia Seltos 1.4L Turbo Petrol (GTX+ DCT)-3ceb754e0c5a4180877b4574ed000d78.jpg

It will be fair to say that finally my GT Line has the shoes to match its nomenclature

Thanks for sharing!

Some questions:

1. The side profile of 55 seems higher. Ideal was 50 (for R17). Wouldn't this reduce suspension travel and alter camber angle? Any reason you didn't go for 235/50/R17?

2. With the added width of tire, will the existing alloys suffice?

Thanks.

Taking liberty to answer the 1st question. OEM size is 215/60/R17. With side profile 235/50 the difference in circumference would be 3.3% less than OEM, causing more issues. With side profile 235/55, the difference is just 0.07%. which is negligible change in circumference, negligible error in odometer and speedometer.
