Seltos comes with 3 years standard warranty. I also have 2 years of extended warranty, taking the total to 5 years. So it has to be the authorised service centre.

In other news, one of the HIDs gave up again last night. I suspect a loose connection just like last time. This is the 4th time and I am not happy at all. I sent a note to Anton yesterday midnight right after I arrived at home and waiting for his call. For now, I wouldn't recommend FE Retrofit HID kit to anyone.

It was the same last time as well and they had changed the blaster

On a dark road, even a single light seems enough. But on a highway or newly tarred road, it fades easily

A bunch of good news and bad news to report. First the good ones:

Over the weekend, this started working on its own. Must be a loose connection it seems. I have to get it checked but it can wait.

I went to Anton's place yesterday. He looked into it himself and while he suspected a loose connection/shoddy work from him team, it was found to be a bad ballast (the one which was replaced a month ago). They changed it with a new one, tested it and I was out in 20 minutes.

On Sunday evening, Mrs.A insisted that I keep the promise that I had made - to visit the nursery. Her sister and nephew also joined us and off we went. We managed to buy what looks like close to 30 saplings. All well and they fit in the boot after I removed the parcel tray, even though I had the rather bulky car cover in one corner of the boot

Now comes the bad part - goats messing with my car.
Ownership Review | My Kia Seltos HTK+ 1.5L Diesel MT (Coyote) | EDIT: 4 years, 70,000 kms up!-20220424_205040.jpg

On the return leg, it was dark and I had the 2 fogs + DRL + 1 headlight on. I was on the narrow Gunjur - Doddakannelli road, when I saw a bunch of 5-6 goats on the other end walking towards me. As I came nearer, I realized they were fighting and suddenly decided to runs towards the car (very unlike goats). They didn't come under the wheels but couple of them dashed against the side of the car. Since there was traffic, I couldn't stop but looking in the mirror I could see the goats walking away on the road, as if nothing happened. Their shepherd was nowhere to be seen as well.

Can be seen 00:50 onwards.

Anyway, the end result is this.

The damage to the rear door seems very minimal and might go away with some polishing. Front one was deep gashes and might need some denting as well.

As I often joke to my friends, I need to do a "hawan" for the car to ward off the evil eye.

re: Ownership Review | My Kia Seltos HTK+ 1.5L Diesel MT (Coyote) | EDIT: 4 years, 70,000 kms up!

It had been ages since we had a weekend trip. So we had one yesterday - a trip to Sakleshpur which had been elusive for some time. In the itinerary, we had 3 places:

1. Mavanuru Malleswara Temple (Windmill temple)

2. Guddada Rangaswaamy Betta

3. Shettihalli Rosary Church

Started from Bangalore by 7AM and the breakfast point was A2B Udayapura which we reached by 9:40. Next up, we went to the windmill temple. The day was hot and humid but the temple was cool and serene.

From there, we proceeded to the Guddada Rangaswamy betta, which was a 2 hr. drive. At the foot of the hill, we saw two bikes parked and the road ahead looked steep. So we decided to park the car there and hike up. About a km of steep roads and then you look down upon the valley. Floating clouds engulf the peaks.

The roads are steep at places and one has to be careful while climbing up/down. Cars can and did go up, if you maintain a decent momentum. Ground clearance is not the problem at all. If you have to halt the car at any spot, resuming the drive can be tricky at times due to the presence of thin gravel layer under the hard road.

We were carrying water and some homemade cake which we devoured. Cold breeze and the fog was blowing endlessly.

By the time we had hiked down to the spot where we left the car, it was 3:30PM. It was cloudy and cool. Decided to have our lunch then and there. The mat was spread on the grass, lunch (which we were carrying) was served and we were ready for the picnic!

There's a small cafe in front the church where we grabbed some tea and then started back around 6:45PM. After near Yadiyur, we encountered some severe rains and had to slow down. While the rains abated later, we kept getting occasional rains right until we reached home.

By 8:40PM, we arrived at Empire Kunigal for dinner and by 11:15PM, we were home. Traffic was thin as per Bangalore weekend standards and it was a nice drive back home.

This was a false alarm. What looked like a deep scratch, was some top layer from the goats' horns. After I washed the car and the affected area thoroughly, it came off. What's left behind is a minor hairline surface scratch line which should go away even with a light polishing.

While this was a good thing, I noticed another issue. The driver side wiper continues to struggle to make a smooth swipe even though it wipes well. Especailly while making the upward swipe, it jumps (can be seen in the video below). If the rain frequency is high, this juddering gets masked easily. Since these are new wipers and have barely been used, I am sure now it is the wiper arm which is the culprit.

re: Ownership Review | My Kia Seltos HTK+ 1.5L Diesel MT (Coyote) | EDIT: 4 years, 70,000 kms up!

The temples of Belur and Halebeedu have been on our wish-list for quite some time now. Although we crossed the city multiple times, we could never make a stop there. Last weekend, when a opportunity came to plan a day trip, I chose Belur.

Started around 6:30AM and had reached A2B, Udayapura by 9AM. Roads were busy and the flyover/road works between Kunigal and Udayapura slowed us down.

Ownership Review | My Kia Seltos HTK+ 1.5L Diesel MT (Coyote) | EDIT: 4 years, 70,000 kms up!-20220515_093606.jpg

Post breakfast, we headed to Belur first: Sri Chennakeshava Swamy Temple Belur. We reached by 11AM. It was a hot sunny day and I got a parking spot farther away from the entrance. I left my footwear in the car but my wife was smart enough. She found the shoestand near the entrance.

The temple complex has multiple small temples within it and small pond at the right corner of it. After offering our prayers, we walked around the complex and then headed back around 11:40AM.

Next stop was the Hoysaleshwara Temple, Halebeedu. Situated about 17 kms from Belur, it took us 20 mins to reach this temple. After offering our prayers, we explored the beautiful garden behind the temple. There's huge lake beside the temple complex and hence, one can feel the cool breeze blowing into the garden. I even managed to get a nice power nap, lying on the lawn.

By this time, it was 2PM and we were hungry. Hoysala Village Resort was another place that we had been wanting to go. So lunch was planned and executed at its restaurant. While the price was slightly on the higher side, the food was excellent. It was 4PM when we left the resort.

Manjarabad Fort was also on our itinerary but after a heavy meal, we chose to skip and head back home. In all these years, we have never returned on Hassan - Bangalore highway before 7PM. So that day, the road felt 'new' to me!

Nelamangala <-> Hassan used to be fast/relaxed driving stretch, but not anymore. With the road expansion work going on and the new flyovers being constructed, the service roads are creating bottle-necks. All the diversions means, road discipline has also taken a huge hit on this stretch.

I was expecting traffic to be thin but I was in for a rude shock. I encountered dense traffic from Hassan, all the way till Nelamangala. It was a rat race to the finish line! Some might call me crazy but I found some stretches of "free" road only after crossing Nelamangala. After being stuck at multiple spots, managed to reach home by 8PM.

Odo is ~42.7k kms now. Car would remain idle for the next 2 weeks as I am traveling. Once I am back, I will schedule the 50k service for Coyote.

Because of the incessant rains in Bangalore, I don't get a chance nor see any point in giving it a wash

re: Ownership Review | My Kia Seltos HTK+ 1.5L Diesel MT (Coyote) | EDIT: 4 years, 70,000 kms up!

After full 27 months, I got on a flight and was away for 2 weeks. Coyote was left behind. I didn't get a chance to get it washed before I left and I couldn't put the cover on a dirty car. When I returned yesterday, I was greeted with this.

Ownership Review | My Kia Seltos HTK+ 1.5L Diesel MT (Coyote) | EDIT: 4 years, 70,000 kms up!-20220605_221942.jpg

Bangalore got some heavy rains last night and as luck would have it, I had to step out for some work. A 10 km drive in the rain was enough to wash it and make it driveable for another week. That said, the quacking (no more a squeak) wiper blade made my drive miserable!

Ownership Review | My Kia Seltos HTK+ 1.5L Diesel MT (Coyote) | EDIT: 4 years, 70,000 kms up!-20220605_230456.jpg

Service is due and I will get it done this week so the car is ready for the next trip.

Maruti SCross 1.5 P MT: Short Review

I flew down to Bhubaneswar for a 15 day trip to attend a marriage, spend some time with family and, was supposed to fly back on Saturday.

Meanwhile, with offices opening up, a close friend was to come to Bangalore and get his car along. He was looking for some company for the long trip back. With some turn of events, his plan was in jeopardy and I decided to cancel my return ticket at the last moment and drive back with him. After spending good 5 days and 2100 kms with his car (we took it to the wedding too), I was very impressed and wanted to share my experience.

The car in question is a 9 month old, 19k run (at the end of our trip) S-Cross 1.5 Petrol manual, a car which was in my wishlist (Kia Seltos 1.5D vs Hyundai Creta 1.4D vs something else?)but was not available when I bought the Seltos.

My observations are in comparison to the Seltos and the 4th-gen City i-vtec MT that I drive frequently.

1. Ride: The right balance of firm and soft, it helps push the S-Cross through bad broken roads without worrying. Unlike the Seltos, you don't get the jarring feedback even when the car hits a sharp bump. The City has a soft ride too but at the cost of handling. Unlike, S-Cross and Seltos, it can't fly through bad roads.

S-Cross>>Seltos>City

2. Handling: Due to low centre of gravity, there isn't any body roll. Car holds its line in the high speed curves. That said, the car feels light/floats and as such, isn't confidence inspiring at higher speeds (above 120). All through the 1000+ kms that I drove, I maintained speeds between 80-110 as I didn't enjoy going beyond it. Another place where it feels unsettled is when there's a sudden change in road height (on road diversions or flyovers, bridges, etc.).

In comparison, Seltos 'feels' heavier and planted in all those conditions and at much higher speeds too. On the other hand, City feels even lighter than S-Cross.

Seltos>S-Cross>>City

3. Brakes: Excellent brakes which are progressive, have limited pedal travel and have very good bite. ABS is also tuned perfectly and the overall brake system always feels adequate given the weight of the car. Brakes on the City is equally good but feel overserved for the car's weight. ABS of the Seltos is the bane although the brakes themselves are good.

SCross>City>Seltos

4. Steering: Steering of the SCross is light and has good feedback. I would rate it at par with City. Seltos has a slightly heavier steering and I would prefer that.

Seltos>SCross=City

5. Driving and Seating Comfort: Front Seats on the SCross are wide and have decent underthigh support. I could walk into the car (reminded me of my WagonR), settle down in the driver seat to get a clear view of the road and the controls were in my reach. Much to my liking.

On the City, I have to crouch in and pull myself out of the car. Front seat has poor lower back and underthigh support. Given the stance, I feel seated on the road which makes me uncomfortable. My wife prefers the rear seat of the City over the Seltos anyday because of the better recline.

Moving on to the Seltos, I hop into the car, am seated higher and get an even better view of the road although some of it is robbed by that high set dashboard/touchscreen. Seats are adequately wide but have much better under thigh support. Due to this reason, to me the driving posture of the Seltos feels slightly better than S-Cross.

Cabin space, in all the 3 cars, is more than adequate and never feels like a compromise. Since we were 2 of us in the S-Cross and were carrying a lot of luggage, we used the boot and the rear seat without second thoughts. Seltos has a slightly larger boot while City has the largest.

Of all the 3 cars and given their dimensions, the S-Cross felt the most nimble to drive in the traffic conditions. Seltos was next as it feels much wider than the S-Cross. City was last given the low ground clearance, view from seat and the boot at the rear.

6. Performance: I won't compare a diesel car among petrols here. Let's just say that I missed the punch of the turbo diesel all through both the trips. Instead of the point and shoot nature of my diesel, I have to plan the overtakes on either of the petrols. The S-Cross shines with the beautiful bottom end response but has a weak mid-range and uninspiring top end. On the City, its a dull bottom end and things start improving there-on. Slow down at the speedbreaker without stopping and the S-Cross can pull away in 3rd or even 4th gear (Due to low gearing and good bottom end response), something which City (or even the diesel Seltos) can never accomplish. It is perfect city car among the three and is good enough on the highway for sedate driving. But beyond 120, the progress of the S-Cross was slow.

S-Cross has a much better NVH insulation and the engine note itself sounds better than the loud scream of the Honda. Gearbox is smooth shifting on either cars but it was effortless on the S-Cross.

Given the ground clearance, I never had to careful about scrapping (nor it did) the S-Cross.

Seltos (D)>>>S-Cross>City

7. Lights: The LED projectors of the S-Cross Alpha might look great but are barely adequate on a dark road. The halogen projectors of the City are a lot better here.

8. Features: The S-Cross Alpha was better loaded than my Seltos HTK+. If I were to complain, it will be missing rear AC vents and that toothpick stuck on the instrument cluster

9. Fuel efficiency: Driving at 80-90kmph and liberally using the cruise control through the first 400 kms, my friend got 15.4kmpl on MID. I took over and maintained 90-110kmph without using the CC and the number jumped to 16 kmpl.

10: Pricing and VFM: At 12.2L, the S-Cross is a very good car. If I was looking for a petrol car with frequent city use, I would prefer the S-Cross over the Seltos or City. For highway centric use, Seltos D was worth the premium. I could never become a sedan convert, nor was my friend. So we are happy with the respective cross-overs.

Thanks for sharing. Let me share this post with my wife. We booked a new Scross Petrol MT for her just yesterday. Since I own a Scross diesel for last 7 years, we already have very good confidence in the product quality. But your post will help add the petrol engine perspective.

It is no surprise to see all the great (underrated) qualities of Scross, even compared with the latest and greatest products. It still holds its ground in so many areas.

One small miss in the braking section of your post. Scross brakes are one of the best in the game, not just because of ABS+EBD but also because of all 4 disc brakes. In my 7 years ownership, the brakes have never disappointed me.

Congratulations on your booking! Buying another S-Cross shows how happy you are with the car. And you won't be disappointed with the petrol one.

IMO, S-Cross suffered from lack of "SUV" image and hence, people chose the Brezza instead of this. Otherwise, this is any day better than Brezza (I get to drive a diesel one very frequently). If people gave a chance and did a TD of S-Cross, they will realize the true potential.

I am aware of the all-round disc setup of the S-Cross. I didn't highlight it in my post as my Seltos D also has disc on all 4 wheels (but lacks EBD). That said, brakes on the S-Cross are indeed very good.

I have an S Cross diesel (2019 model)and had one prior to that too (2015 model)
I would say it is one of the best cars of a long list of about 12 different cars owned by me at different times since 1997.
I also have a BMW X1 but the S Cross is a car which I am very fond of.
Great capabilities and roomy, economical and a no-nonsense car

7th/50k service update

I have been getting the car's service done at ~8k km mark and this time was no different. Called up Epitome KIA on Monday for Saturday visit and they informed they're open from 7:30AM. Well done!

8.2k kms since last service. I reset this trip meter after every service

Bangalore service centers do a waterless wash only. However, Coyote was in such a state that a friend who looked at my car in the basement the other day, thought the side plastic trims were indeed painted in body color and not black.

Got a quick water wash done at a nearby place before the car went for service. I was sure such a state was not ideal for a waterless wash routine.

Almost 2 months of no wash and this is how it looked

Even after the wash, the plastic trims looked dull due to the prolonged exposure to muck. It was a very basic water + soap wash and cost me 100 bucks!

On Saturday, I woke up early and reached Epitome by 7:40AM and mine was the 3rd car already. Service Advisor Naveen was there to receive the cars. Apart from the usual 50k service, I had 2 complaints/requests:

1. Squeaking wiper where I wanted to replace the driver side wiper arm. I also shared couple of videos that I had recorded for this issue.

2. Check the brakes and replace the brake pads as the car has run ~43k kms.

While reviewing the car, he mentioned the car is very well maintained for a 2.5 yr old piece. He also noted the new tyres. Since the tyre and alignment were 2500 kms old, I asked him not to do the alignment again which he readily agreed. Next, he said that the 3M AC disinfection done at previous services were unnecessary and asked if I wanted a evaporator cleaning. I agreed as I had been noticing a little foul smell once in a while when I start the car AC. An estimate of 8.5k was given which I agreed and headed to the lounge to wait.

3rd car of the day

Work started by 8AM and was done by 9:30AM. Engine oil, oil filter were changed and air filter + cabin filter were cleaned. Naveen also sent me few pictures of the work being done. Brake pads have another 5mm of life left and were left untouched.

Next they checked the wiper complaint. They found a little play in the blade, around its lock. To verify if it was an arm issue, they fit a blade and then the arm of their TD car. Finally they changed the blade only which they said to be faulty. I was called and the SA and service manager explained me this whole thing. I wasn't convinced as the blade had been changed during the last 3 services as well. I insisted they change the arm and I can pay for it if it can't be covered under warranty. So they went back and checked the service log in system. As per it, during the last service, only the wiper rubber was changed (and charged to me). They also showed me the old arm which had a play, the new one which was tight fit and insisted not to spend on a new arm for now. Fair enough.

Wiper test going on

By 11, the car went for a trial run and then for a waterless wash routine. Car was ready by 12:15PM. Paid Rs.8057 and was on my way out. It was the best service experience so far where Naveen never insisted any extra services, readily agreed to my requests and did a fair analysis of the problem without going for replacement of parts. Full marks to him.

He sent me these pics of the WIP

They use a 3M AC cleaner foam and spray it into the vents.

Link to the foam

I had opted out of it during the 40k service terming it unnecessary.

In the past 3-4 months, I noticed a mild foul smell creeping in for few minutes every time I turned on the AC. After some reading, I found the reason - this is due to bacteria formation due to water getting trapped in the AC lines. To avoid this, I have started turning off the AC few minutes before I park the car so the lines remain nice and dry when we park the car overnight. The smell itself has vanished now. This 3m spray treatment was another step taken to clean up the AC interiors.

Hope that answers your question.

Edit: You can buy this spray and apply it yourself at home. Works for car as well as indoor AC units.

re: Ownership Review | My Kia Seltos HTK+ 1.5L Diesel MT (Coyote) | EDIT: 4 years, 70,000 kms up!

A week ago, we drove to Kannur and then Nileshwar before returning to Bangalore. This post is mostly above car updates. I will try not to be lazy and create a separate travelogue for it.

While the car was serviced over the previous weekend, I didn't get time to refuel it. And I read reports of several pumps running dry across the country, including here in KA. As it was already while returning from office the previous night, I took my chance to refuel it the next morning.

Nearing the E mark

Started by 6:45AM and it was only post Nelamangala that I found a good fuel bunk which was operational (had fuel) and didn't have a long queue of vehicles! By then the car had hit the reserve as well. Tanked up to the brim so we are set for atleast half the trip.

51+ litres down

Based on past experiences shared by BHPians, we took the Nelamangala - Channarayapatna - Holenarasipur (tiffin break on its outskirts) - Arakalagud - Piriyapatna - Virajpet - Coorg Gate restaurant (lunch break) - Irrity - Mattanur - Kannur. Roads were good for most parts. Stay was at Seashell Harris Beach Home and its parking was surrounded by trees giving it a permanent shade.

Once in Kerala, we got intermittent rains every few kms and the wipers did their job very silently. I got ample chance to experience the famous Kerala highways. All the power of the CRDi engine was put to good use while performing overtakes on those highways. Some of the city roads were steeper and narrower than most ghat roads I have seen. Got to practice quite a few incline starts too, without any challenge.

Another observation about the cities in Kerala - the city roads go round their way while crossing the railway lines at multiple points. And these are manned level crossings without a flyover. I must have spent atleast 1 hour idling at these crossing during the 4 days of my trip.

In Kannur, we went to the the Muzhuppilangad beach, which is also known as the only drive in beach in Asia. Probably due to the underlying rock composition of the area, the beach sand is very hard and as such, doesn't sink under load. One can see any and all kinds of cars being driven and parked on the beach.

Two things were reverberating in my mind: the video of a Creta which had sunk on a Goa beach the previous evening and the rusting I have seen on cars. Had shared my experience here (Hyundai Creta gets stuck on Goa beach; Driver arrested).

I also saw a yellow plate Etios parked by the water (back facing towards the sea and water crawling near its wheels) and people climbing on it for clicks. 15 minutes later, when they decide to drive out, the Etios front wheels were spinning happily without any traction. Lucky them, after some tugging pushing pulling, the car came out.

I crawled through the length of the beach. One section towards the end looked like a swamp although cars were splashing through it. I turned back. Parked near the sea for a brief photoshoot and then away from water to get some coffee at the cafe.
Took it near the sea

Nileshwar is small city, about 15 kms south of Bekal and 65 kms from Kannur. All thanks to the traffic, it takes 2 hours to cover those 65 kms. We had booked the Malabar Ocean Front resort. No trees, no shade and a rather warm day. Since the property already had a nice private beach, we decided to visit the Bekal fort the next morning.

The following morning after getting ready, I get my phone to check the route and that's when Google tells me the Bekal fort remains shut on Monday! Mrs.A was not happy so I proposed we go for a nice lunch date instead. Deal was sealed and we headed to Bekal. By the time we were done eating the desserts, it had started pouring again. When I reached Nileshwar, the rain had stopped but with the schools getting over, the narrow roads were jammed with autos, school buses and walking kids. And of course, had to wait for a train at a level crossing.

Hot morning

Return route was slightly different this time as we started from Bekal: Nileshwar - Bekal - Periye (got lost here briefly) - Kundamkuzhy - Sullia - Madikeri - Kushalnagar - Arakalagud - Holenarasipur - Channarayapattana - Bangalore.

Last day was a bit of a dampener, me and Mrs.A were not feeling well after we set out from the fort. So I drove non-stop until Bangalore except for couple of bio breaks. Didn’t feel like so we skipped lunch. Several patches of roads were not in the best shape until we reached Madikeri but I could maintain steady speeds through out irrespective of the roads.

Given the roads were drove through, the car was muddy at its best. I am glad I didn't have to drive at night else I would have to clean the headlight lens for the projectors to do a good job

We had started from Bekal around 10:45AM and reached Channarayapattana by 3:45PM. Another refuel was due and got it from the BPCL bunk in C.Patna city.

Another 53 litres down although the car hadn't hit reserve until then

From there, it was another non-stop fast drive to home and the car didn't disappoint one bit but brought back some smile in me. Being a weekday, hardly got any traffic until Yeshwantpur and managed to reach home by 6:30PM. Overall, the trip FE was 15 kmpl.

The new tyres have done 4k kms now. I had tried 35 Psi and then 33 Psi but felt the ride to be stiff, especially at city speeds. When I returned from home and drove the car, I felt the ride was softer and as such, decided not to top up the tyres for this trip. My experiment gave good results and the ride was a lot better over good and broken roads, road grip was very good and the tyres themselves are silent. I will get to know the magic Psi number once I hit the tyre inflator (it has 6 weeks since they were topped up).

Given how lost the car looked among the cleaner/shinier companions in my office parking, I got another water wash done yesterday. Same cheap option nearby but does the job of removing the muck and grime

The driver side ORVM has been hit twice. Once by an Activa rider and the other a yellow plate Marazzo. Both of them were in tearing hurry on the narrow lanes of Yemalur. Marazzo hit gave this scratch on the cover and lens. Nothing more.

It was delivered on Saturday and I thought of giving it a try this weekend. Since the car was washed last weekend, I didn't bother for another water wash. Instead did a round of waterless wash first.

The ceramic spray bottle explains that it can be used on top of existing coatings or can be combined with wax. So I did a round of Turtle Hard shell wax too. And then finally, the spray and wipe session of this ceramic spray. A Sunday morning well spent.

As compared to results of previous wash and wax sessions, I noticed a 'wet' look this time. I couldn't find any instruction for curing of this coat except for no water washing for 24 hours.
Hi Ashish, how has been your experience with the ceramic spray? How long does it hold up and any dust repellant abilities that you see? Would you recommend it over a waxing or in conjunction with it?

Thanks it advance - more so for diligently maintaining this wonderful thread. Everytime I think of going out for a short drive from Bangalore, I know where to head to for ideas

It lasts 3-4 months easily with the water-repellant effect diminishing with time. Car shine still remains but I reapplied it after every quarter. No dust repellant effect as such. It does make the car surface very smooth and makes dusting the car easy. Fine dust gets blown away if you are driving the car.

Major advantage per me is its water-repelling nature. Spray on the glasses+windscreen and driving in the rain is a lot easier.

For better and long lasting results, Turtle recommends using it over a clean and waxed car. Per my experience, I would agree.
