Once the car went back in with the same complaint, they had no option but to replace the steering column under warranty. But to carry out the replacement, some specialists had come from Bangalore, atleast that's what I was told.

I instructed my SA Sharath Kumar in United Toyota Udupi to keep me updated and let me know about all their findings regarding the steering column issue. He told me they will have to follow their diagnosis process given by TKM for this issue. Their step was to have a look at the battery first and sent me a report of it saying Battery health is low and needs replacement, I told them i will get it changed later as it is not showing any symptoms since the car is daily driven.

They kept the car for two more days for diagnosis and put a supplementary battery in place to check if the issue is solved. As expected the sticky steering remained same. I told them to push for replacement of the column under warranty rather than do trial & Error for this issue and waste more time. I even sent them the circular MSIL sent to the dealers if customer comes with a complaint of sticky steering. Later that evening he let me know that replacement column is on its way and it will reach in 3 days.

I told them to send me the photos of the old column with new column side by side during the replacement. He sent those across and called me 3 days later saying the job is done. I test drove the car and found no issues.

On another note, I asked them to replace the boot lifters as well under warranty but they rejected saying it is working as expected. I have recorded a video showing its weakness and it doesn't lift on its own, Lets see what happens in the future regarding this matter. Apart from this issue, United Toyota Udupi did a fabulous job.

On 05/09/2023, the while driving back home on a rainy evening, the left side tyre went over a pothole on the notorious Panambur-Baikampady stretch of NH66. I didn't think much of if at that time and parked the car at home. After half an hour or so, I noticed the front left was losing air fast. Next morning, the tyre was completely flat and there was tiny crack on the sidewall.







The car had clocked 49100 odd kms on the odometer on the stock Apollo Alnac 4G tyres at the time of this incident. There was some amount tread of left on it that might have lasted only for around 800-1000 kms, I decided to get the other three tyres changed as well.

Drove to Wheel Works, Chilimbi Mangalore, where the owner Mr Rohit gave a choice of Apollo, Ceat, Yokohama and Bridgestone tyres. He suggested I go for Yokohama tyres. I stuck to the same stock tyre size because I did not wan to give any excuse for the dealership void the extended warranty on the car that is valid till Feb 2025. Total cost of tyre 4 Yokohama 195/55 R16 S-drives came to be Rs 33,300(Wheel Alignment & Balancing were complimentary)








Regular Service (50,000 kms service)
The car was due for its regular service at 49393 kms on the odometer. Booked the service on Toyota i-connect app for 08/09/2023.

Total bill came to Rs 6027. I had opted for the Alloy wheel polish as it had a lot of tar and some sticky substance on them.













The FE figures remain more or less the same since the last service - Lifetime average of 17.1 kmpl.

Steering Rack replacment
Over the last month, another issue developed with the steering/suspension that was bothering me. The car will be completing four years in February 2024 and has far clocked 55,000 odd kms on the speedometer.

While going over rough roads or even concrete roads, a minor rattling sound was being heard which seemed to be coming from the front right side. The rattling sound was as if something was hitting a plastic part on the front lower right side.

The car was sent to United Toyota workshop, Mangalore. Initially they said it might be an issue with the suspension and it will have to be opened and checked. As the car is under extended warranty till Feb 2025, they will have to consult with Toyota for solutions/approvals and it might take 3-4 days subject to parts availability. Next day, they tried replacing the suspension on Toyota's suggestion, but the sound was still there. I was informed that they have been advised by Toyota to replace the steering rack to see if it eliminates sound.

The steering rack was replaced and did the trick. The sound is no longer there. It took 6 days to get the car back(including two days holidays in between).

This again shows the importance of taking maximum available extended warranty while buying a car. It not only saves you money but gives you great peace of mind in the warranty period. Toyota has been great so far for expeditiously honoring warranty claims.

Well i am an example of how i ended up paying 11k for steeing rack replacement just after 4 years. I didnt take the 5th year warranty and ended up paying for it. I had the same issue that you described.

Back in 2010, I faced a nightmare with my 2009 i20 over steering related issues. While all work was done under warranty, it made me realise the importance to buy maximum available warranty for the car.

On our roads and weather conditions, where even new things can fail, extended warranty is a must. Atleast for five years( or whichever is the maximum available warranty years/kms wise), one gets to own his car with complete peace of mind. In fact, every car we bought since then, we bought additional warranty while buying the car. It has certainly helped in saving us monetarily from costly replacement parts.
